Picks and Predictions for MLB Games – May 17th, 2022

| May 16, 2022 4:17 pm PDT

There is plenty of MLB action on Tuesday, May 17, but the sportsbooks aren’t giving us many early odds. We have 18 games on the schedule, as the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals, and New York Mets will host a doubleheader.

Unfortunately, we only have odds for seven matchups. We’d love more betting opportunities, but this allows us to zero in on these matchups. We shouldn’t have a problem making predictions and finding the best bets.

Let’s kick things off with the odds for the seven matchups on the board.

MLB Odds for Tuesday, May 17th

  • Reds (+139) vs. Guardians (-151), O/U 8
  • Tigers (+204) vs. Rays (-225), O/U 7
  • Yankees (-205) vs. Orioles (+188), O/U 8
  • Mariners (+134) vs. Blue Jays (-145), O/U 8.5
  • Astros (+101) vs. Red Sox (-111), O/U 8.5
  • Angels (-125) vs. Rangers (+115), O/U 8.5
  • Giants (-145) vs. Rockies (+134), O/U 12

The Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians will kick off Tuesday night’s baseball action. Cincinnati has been one of the worst teams against the spread, but they and Cleveland are top five at going over their run total.

Can the Detroit Tigers pull off the upset as the biggest underdog? Detroit and the Tampa Bay Rays are in the bottom half of the MLB against the spread. Detroit has gone under their run total the second-most times in the majors.

The Baltimore Orioles are coming off a rough three-game sweep at the hands of Detroit. Baltimore has been solid against the spread, but the Yankees have covered the second-most among AL teams.

We have a big betting discrepancy with the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. Seattle has covered in 50.4 percent of games, while Toronto is down at 40 percent.

We’re likely heading for a low-scoring matchup between the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox. Both teams rank top-five in going under their run total.

Surprisingly, the Texas Rangers have covered the spread more than any AL team. Can they keep that going against the AL West-leading Los Angeles Angels?

The San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies will cap off our betting slate. This is the largest run line I’ve seen in 2022. Colorado has gone over their run total the third-most in the majors, while San Francisco is a few spots behind.

Top MLB Predictions for May 17th

  • Reds Over Guardians
  • Rays Over Tigers
  • Yankees Over Orioles
  • Mariners Over Blue Jays
  • Astros Over Red Sox
  • Angels Over Rangers
  • Rockies Over Giants

Two weeks ago, you couldn’t have paid me to pick the Cincinnati Reds. However, they’ve looked good lately, winning six of their last ten games. I think they’ll keep it going with a victory over the Cleveland Guardians.

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to fly under the radar. Their pitching hasn’t been as strong as expected, but they should limit the Detroit Tigers.

A pair of AL East teams will have their third series of the young season. The New York Yankees have the best record in baseball. Jameson Taillon should pick up his third victory of the season against the Baltimore Orioles.

I like the Seattle Mariners to score a road victory in Toronto. Neither team has played up to expectation, but the Mariners have the pitching advantage.

The Houston Astros are the hottest team in baseball. They’ve won 12 of their last 13 games thanks to a dominant pitching staff. I can’t imagine picking against the Astros when they’re playing this well.

Los Angeles Angels starter Reid Detmers will make his first start since pitching a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays. Detmers isn’t striking out many batters, but he has improved. Mike Trout and the Angels’ offense should lead them to a division victory.

I’m closing my MLB predictions with the Colorado Rockies taking down the San Francisco Giants. This pick comes down to my lack of trust in Giants starter Alex Cobb. Colorado has cooled off after a rough start, but I like their chances for the victory.

Best Bets for MLB Games on 5/17/22

  • Mariners to Win (+134)
  • Giants vs. Rockies Under 12 Runs (-120)
  • Astros to Win (+101)

My best bets for MLB action have been pretty successful in 2022. Let’s see if we can keep it going on Tuesday.

The Seattle Mariners enter Tuesday’s matchup as the underdog against the Toronto Blue Jays. Surprisingly, Toronto’s offense ranks in the bottom half of the majors in runs scored. Ultimately, I like the Mariners to win because of the pitching matchup.

Logan Gilbert (Mariners) Jose Berrios (Blue Jays)
ERA 2.13 5.82
WHIP 1.11 1.56
Strikeouts 42 24

Logan Gilbert is an early AL Cy Young contender. He struggled in his last two starts, but a matchup with the Blue Jays should put him back on track.

The best MLB betting sites believe the San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies are heading for a high-scoring matchup. Personally, I’m not buying into the hype.

I picked the Rockies to win this matchup because of the starting pitchers. Saying that, I don’t have a ton of faith in the Rockies’ offense. San Francisco has the edge in that department, but they have a tough matchup.

This matchup could feature nine to ten runs, but 12+ is asking for a lot.

It’s hard to believe the Houston Astros are the underdog against the Boston Red Sox. Houston pitching has been the driving force behind their hot streak.

  • 1.78 ERA (1st)
  • 0.98 WHIP (1st)

Those stats represent their numbers in the last 13 games. The only pitching staff that has been close is the Los Angeles Angels. Starting pitcher Jose Urquidy has begun to find his rhythm. He should lead the Astros to another victory.
