Picks and Predictions for MLB Games – May 19th, 2022

| May 18, 2022 5:22 pm PDT

My MLB predictions had a great start on Tuesday, hitting on four of my first five matchups. I lost my final two matchups, but we still had a successful 4-3 day. Unfortunately, only one of my three favorite bets cashed in.

We head into a small MLB slate on Thursday. There are seven games on the schedule, but only four have odds available. That gives us a strong chance to have a perfect day.

The four games on the board will start in the afternoon, so don’t waste time placing your bets.

MLB Odds for Thursday, May 19th

  • Yankees (-201) vs. Orioles (+184), O/U 8
  • Padres (+110) vs. Phillies (-120), O/U 8
  • Cardinals (+134) vs. Mets (-145), O/U 7
  • White Sox (-130) vs. Royals (+120), O/U 9.5

The New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles will conclude their four-game series on Thursday afternoon. New York won the first two games of the series, but they failed to cover in Tuesday’s victory.

Both teams rank in the top half of the MLB in covering the spread. It’s a different story on the run total. Baltimore has gone under in 66.7 percent of their games.

The San Diego Padres have been one of the top teams at covering the spread. Only five teams have covered the spread more than the Padres. The Philadelphia Phillies are 18-18 against the spread.

Philadelphia has been a high-scoring team, going over their run total in 55.9 percent of their games. San Diego isn’t far back, going 18-18 with the run total.

The St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets should have an intriguing matchup. Both teams are top 10 at covering the spread, with the Cardinals being better by a mere 0.3 percent. Is that enough for you to bet on St. Louis?

Both teams are right around .500 on the run total. Their combined record with the over/under is 33-37-4. Something that to give in this matchup.

It’s weird to say the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals cap off Thursday’s action because the first pitch is 2:10 p.m. ET.

Both teams have struggled against the spread, as they rank bottom ten. There isn’t a significant discrepancy with the run total, with both teams favoring the under. The White Sox have gone under the run total in 60 percent of their games.

Top MLB Predictions for May 19th

  • Yankees Over Orioles
  • Padres Over Phillies
  • Cardinals Over Mets
  • White Sox Over Royals

The New York Yankees lost the first series to the Baltimore Orioles. Since then, the Yankees have won five straight games against the Orioles as they boast the best record in baseball.

There really isn’t any reason to take the Orioles over the Yankees. The Yankees’ offense is the best in the majors, and their pitching staff isn’t too shabby. They should continue their dominance over Baltimore.

Honestly, I thought the San Diego Padres were in trouble after Fernando Tatis Jr’s. wrist injury. However, they’ve been one of the best teams in baseball. They’ll enter Thursday’s matchup as the underdog, but I like their chances.

Yu Darvish will be on the mound for Thursday’s game. He had a rough outing against the San Francisco Giants, but he has a pair of great starts that show he still has elite potential.

@ Diamondbacks (April 7) Vs. Dodgers (April 23)
Innings 6.0 6.0
Hits 0 1
Runs 0 0
Strikeouts 3 7

The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals have looked even in their five matchups in 2022. New York leads the season series as the teams split Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Honestly, I have a little more faith in the Cardinals’ offense. Starting pitchers Dakota Hudson and Chris Bassitt have been even, with Bassitt walking fewer players. I like the value for the Cardinals on the road.

It’s surprising that the MLB sportsbooks give the Chicago White Sox a slight advantage. They’ve been the better team lately, winning ten of their last 15 games.

The Kansas City Royals had a solid 5-5 start, but it’s been downhill since. Kansas City is 8-17 since that start. Their offense has scored the fourth-fewest runs in the majors.

Best Bets for MLB Games on 5/19/22

  • White Sox to Win (-130)
  • Yankees vs. Orioles Under 8.5 Runs (+105)
  • Padres to Win (+110)

The lack of MLB matchups on the board means we have to use almost all the same predictions in my best bets. Nonetheless, we can further back our claim for these picks.

We already talked about the Chicago White Sox’s recent hot streak compared to the Kansas City Royals struggling. Honestly, that’s not the biggest reason I’m backing the White Sox in this matchup. It’s mainly about the pitching matchup.

Royals starter Carlos Hernandez has been among the worst starting pitchers in baseball. He’s 0-3 with a 9.11 ERA, 2.03 WHIP, 15 walks, and 13 strikeouts. He has allowed 3+ runs in five of his six starts. Chicago should tee off on Hernandez.

I’m all over the New York Yankees defeating the Baltimore Orioles, but I’m taking value with the under. I like the under in this matchup because of Orioles starter Bruce Zimmerman.

  • 2-2
  • 2.72 ERA
  • 1.12 WHIP
  • 9 Walks
  • 32 Strikeouts

Zimmerman hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start this season. He’ll have a tough time against the Yankees, but he should limit their offense. Not to mention, the Orioles struggle to score runs.

It’s interesting to see the San Diego Padres as the underdog against the Philadelphia Phillies. Philadelphia will host their matchup, but the Padres have been the better team. Their offense has produced similar numbers, but the bullpen gives San Diego the edge.

Philadelphia’s bullpen ranks bottom five in ERA and WHIP. The Padres bullpen doesn’t walk many people, ranking top 10 in WHIP. That’s why they stand out as one of my favorite bets.
