Minnesota United vs. Seattle Sounders – MLS, July 18, 2021
It’s official – Seattle is now enjoying the longest unbeaten start to a season in Major League Soccer history.
The Sounders have picked up eight wins, and five draws from their opening 13 games and currently sit three points clear at the top of the Western Conference – 14 points ahead of seventh-place Minnesota.
The Loons suffered a 4-0 thrashing to Seattle on the opening weekend of the campaign but have managed to turn things around. After losing their first four matches, Adrian Heath’s men have since lost just one of their previous eight outings.
In this betting preview, I analyze both teams, look at the MLS odds for Sunday’s clash, and provide my Minnesota United vs. Seattle Sounders prediction and pick.
Can Minnesota End Seattle’s Hot Streak?
Minnesota’s recent run of results makes the previous meeting between these two sides feel like a very long time ago.
Three months back, the Loons suffered a humiliating 4-0 crushing at the hands of the Sounders. But since then, they have made their way up the standings by picking up a string of positive results.
With the European Championship over, Minnesota can now call upon three key players again. Along with Slovakia international Jan Gregus, Finland duo Jukka Raitala and Robin Lod should return to the team this weekend.
Despite missing five games this year, Lod is one of the Loons’ most productive players this season, having notched two goals and two assists.
Will the Sounders Remain Unbeaten in 2021?
We all know that Seattle hasn’t lost a single game this season, securing eight wins and five draws in the process. But Brian Schmetzer’s men haven’t simply been avoiding defeat. Instead, they have totally outclassed every other side in the league.
Ten-goal Raul Ruidiaz has helped the Sounders to become the second-highest scorers in the West, while guys like Brad Smith (three goals, three assists) and Joao Paulo (one goal, four assists) have played key supporting roles.
Even without first-choice goalkeeper Stefan Frei, the Sounders have been extremely solid at the back. Deputy GK Stefan Cleveland has been immense between the sticks, keeping three clean sheets in eight appearances while conceding just six times.
Can anyone stop Seattle? At this moment in time, it just doesn’t seem possible.
Minnesota vs. Seattle Betting Odds
Having analyzed both sides, I can’t quite believe what I see here. Yes, Minnesota (1.95) has the home-field advantage on Sunday. But Seattle (3.35) is on a seemingly unstoppable run right now.
Although the online sportsbooks are favoring the Loons to win this one, I can’t bring myself to bet against the Sounders at the moment.
My Minnesota vs. Sounders Prediction and Pick
Seattle Sounders to Win3.35
The Sounders thrashed Minnesota on the opening weekend of the season and haven’t stopped destroying their opponents ever since.
Granted, the Loons have upped their game in recent weeks. But even if they are at their best on Sunday, they still won’t be enough to avoid defeat against this ruthless Seattle team.
The away win is my prediction for Minnesota United vs. Seattle Sounders.
