Minnesota United vs. Austin FC – MLS, June 23, 2021

| June 22, 2021 11:05 am PDT

Minnesota United (2-2-4) welcomes Austin FC (2-3-4) to Allianz Field this Wednesday, June 23, with both sides desperately needing points.

The Loons find themselves third from bottom in the Western Conference – one point ahead of Vancouver and Dallas. Meanwhile, Austin sits tenth in the standings – one point clear of Minnesota.

Let’s not forget that Josh Wolff’s men have already beaten Minnesota this year. The expansion team claimed a 1-0 victory over the Loons almost two months ago, although many have changed since then.

After analyzing the teams, I discuss the odds for Wednesday’s clash before sharing my Minnesota United vs. Austin FC prediction and betting picks.

Minnesota Team News and Analysis

Minnesota United’s Last Five Games:

  • Colorado 3-2 Minnesota (L)
  • Minnesota 1-0 Vancouver (W)
  • Minnesota 1-0 Dallas (W)
  • Real Salt Lake 1-1 Minnesota (D)
  • Dallas 1-1 Minnesota (D)

When you look at Minnesota’s previous five matches, you will only find one defeat. However, that doesn’t tell the full story of the club’s season.

In fact, the Loons lost each of their opening four games this year, with losses to Seattle, Real Salt Lake, and Austin coming before last month’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Rapids.

Adrian Heath’s men must be given credit for turning things around, though. Following wins over Vancouver and Dallas, they extend their unbeaten streak to four games with back-to-back draws.

It is also worth pointing out that Minnesota is coping without three key players at the moment.

Although Robin Lod (Finland), Jukka Raitala (Finland), and Jan Gregus (Slovakia) are all at the European Championship, the team has yet to taste defeat without them.

Assessing Austin’s Recent Form

Austin FC’s Last Five Games:

  • LA Galaxy 2-0 Austin (L)
  • Nashville 1-0 Austin (L)
  • Seattle 0-0 Austin (D)
  • Sporting KC 1-1 Austin (D)
  • Austin 0-0 San Jose (D)

Austin’s inaugural Major League Soccer campaign began with two wins in three matches. After losing to LAFC in their maiden MLS game, the newcomers secured two straight victories over Colorado and Minnesota.

But since then, Los Verdes haven’t managed to record a win in six outings – registering three draws and three defeats along the way.

I guess Wolff’s men can take confidence from their recent upturn.

I mean, they are currently enjoying a three-match unbeaten streak, even if they haven’t been able to return to winning ways in that time.

The Texans have also kept two clean sheets in their previous three games. Having prevented both the Sounders and Quakes from scoring, Austin will fancy their chances of keeping the Loons’ depleted forward line quiet.

Minnesota vs. Austin Betting Odds

Minnesota United to Win1.95
The Draw3.75
Austin FC to Win3.65
Both Teams to Score1.71
Over 1.5 Goals1.27
Under 1.5 Goals3.60

With a four-match unbeaten run behind them, Minnesota (1.95) heads into Wednesday’s clash as the bookmakers’ favorite, leaving Austin (3.65) as the outsider.

I have also included some goal-based markets here, as neither team has been involved in any high-scoring encounters of late.

Minnesota vs. Austin Match Result Pick

  • Pick: Minnesota United to Win – 1.95

It feels like Minnesota has turned a corner recently. Following a testing start to the season, the Loons have found their feet and will be confident of extending their unbeaten streak to five games this week.

This year, both of Minnesota’s wins have come on home soil, so I’m backing the hosts to overcome Austin and claim a third straight win at Allianz Field.

My Minnesota vs. Austin Longshot Pick

  • Pick: Under 1.5 Goals – 3.60

The long odds suggest that this is a longshot pick. But when you assess the recent scoring record of both sides, there is a high chance that Minnesota and Austin will produce less than two goals on Wednesday.

Not only are Los Verdes the lowest scorers in the West, but three of their previous four matches have produced under 1.5 goals. Meanwhile, each of Minnesota’s last four games has dished up less than three goals.
