Pick and Prediction for Mets vs. Cardinals – Monday, April 25th, 2022
There is a stellar matchup tonight between two of the hottest teams in the MLB right now. The New York Mets will be heading to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals. New York has the best record in baseball at an impressive 12-5 to start their season.
The Cardinals are having a respectable season as well at 9-5 and are sitting atop of the NL Central. Both teams will be looking to continue their great starts to the 2022 MLB season, so this is shaping up to be a great game.
With that being said, let’s get right into our Mets vs. Cardinals prediction for who we think comes out on top.
Mets vs. Cardinals Odds for Monday, April 25th (2022)
Even though the Mets will be on the road for this one, they find themselves favored to win on the top MLB betting sites. These two teams are playing very well right now, so the moneyline could be irrelevant at the end of the day.
St. Louis does have the means for an upset though, as Scherzer likely won’t be pitching all 9 innings and the Cardinals get home field advantage.
Not only are these teams enjoying their win/loss records so far, they’ve also been great in terms of run line or against the spread. These two teams are as good as it gets at 2nd and 3rd best in ATS records. The Mets have covered in 64.7% of their games, while the Cardinals are right behind them at 64.3%.
The run line is set at a lower amount at 7 runs, which is thanks to the top tier pitching from both staffs. The unders have a record of 16-11-4, which comes out to a win or push 64.5% of the time.
Mets vs. Cardinals Matchup Preview
The Mets’ league-best record is even more impressive when you take into consideration Jacob deGrom’s absence from the team. deGrom is recovering from shoulder soreness and isn’t expected back until around early June.
They went all in this offseason and should be a legitimate threat to win the World Series this year. Their pitching has always been solid, so adding Scherzer to the lineup will definitely keep that going.
Starling Marte, Eduardo Escobar, and Mark Canha all came over in the offseason as well. Add in the return of Robinson Cano to the lineup and you have yourselves a talented offense as well. Not to mention Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso, who are superstars in their own right.
As for the Cardinals, they could very well be a sleeper for the World Series. They do have some sharpening out to do, but they have veterans who know how to win. Adam Wainwright, Yadier Molina, and Albert Pujols are all Cardinals legends, but are at a combined age of 121 years old (40.3 average).
They can still get the job done, but they don’t have to do all the heavy lifting. Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado are incredible players with Silver Slugger and Gold Glove potential any given season.
Miles Mikolas will be opposing Scherzer tonight. He will be coming into this game with an impressive 1.76 ERA and 1.04 WHIP.
Here’s how his last two starts have looked;
- April 15th @MIL – 6.2 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K
- April 20th @MIA – 5 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 7 K
This looks to be a great pitching matchup, which is why the run total is set lower than what you normally see.
Same Game Parlay for Mets vs. Cardinals
Combining picks into a Same Game Parlay could really boost the odds and call for a monster payout. For my Mets vs. Cardinals picks for my SGP, I took three that combine for (+892) odds. That means a $100 bet on these three options would return an incredible $992.
I like both of the overs for strikeouts with both starting pitchers. They both have good matchups and should be in the game long enough to reach their respective targets. Scherzer being the superior pitcher has his set at 7.5, while Mikolas doesn’t get as many K’s usually and is at 3.5.
Scherzer is one of the pitchers who gets very angry when being pulled out of the game. He is going to pitch close to 100 pitches on any given night, so the strikeouts are going to be there. He’s coming off an incredible performance against the Giants, allowing just one hit/earned run while striking out 10 batters. Carlson, Goldschmidt, Arenado, O’Neill, and Molina are hitting a combined .115 (8 for 69) against Scherzer in their careers.
Mikolas is averaging 6 K’s per game in his last two starts and has done well against Mets’ hitters, but given a small sample size. The only one with a good number of at-bats against him is Marte, who is 5 for 32 (.156) against him.
I do like Jeff McNeil’s matchup against him though. He is hitting .333 against righties in 2022 and .304 in his career. McNeil mashes sinkers (Mikolas most thrown pitch) at a .444 average this year as well.
Mets vs. Cardinals Pick and Prediction for 4/25/2022
Mets to Win-150
Although I like the Cardinals to keep this one close, I just can’t go against Scherzer. Scherzer is coming off an incredible game and has dominated them in his career. He pitched two games against the Cardinals in 2022, combining for 14 innings pitched with 0 earned runs and 22 total strikeouts.
Mikolas has been sharp over his last two games, but has been shaky in his last two seasons (4.16 ERA in 2019, 4.23 ERA in 2021). New York’s offense has been great this season as well, ranking 6th (tied) in runs and 4th in hits per game.
You could also go with Cardinals +1.5 (-140) or Under 6.5 runs (EVEN) here as well, as those bets should have good chances of hitting as well.
