Melbourne Victory vs. Newcastle Jets Betting Preview – A-League, February 21, 2021
Melbourne Victory will be aiming to move off the foot of the A-League ladder when Newcastle visits AAMI Park on Sunday, February 21.
A poor run of one win in six games has left Grant Brebner’s side rooted to the bottom of the standings, while a four-match unbeaten streak means that the Jets are four points ahead in seventh place.
After checking out the odds, I will share my Melbourne Victory vs. Newcastle Jets prediction and betting pick.
Melbourne Victory vs. Newcastle Jets Odds
Despite experiencing a torrid start to the season, Melbourne Victory (2.40) heads into Sunday’s clash as the slight favorite with the online sportsbooks.
Still, the Jets (2.75) will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds this weekend, especially when you consider their recent upturn in form.
Melbourne Victory vs. Newcastle Jets Match Analysis
When Victory went two games unbeaten at the end of January, it looked as though the team had turned a corner. But following back-to-back defeats, the Boys in Blue remain stuck at the foot of the ladder.
Brebner’s side suffered a humiliating 5-2 thrashing at the hands of Brisbane Roar, conceding four goals in the opening 35 minutes at Dolphin Stadium. Despite managing to hold out until the 72nd minute last time out, Victory was eventually beaten 2-0 by Western Sydney Wanderers.
Only one A-League team – Adelaide United – currently has a poorer defensive record than Victory. Brebner’s men have conceded 12 games in six outings this season – two goals per game – while scoring just five in reply.
Needless to say, the Boys in Blue are also the lowest scorers in the league.
With games in hand over the majority of teams above them, there is still plenty of time for Victory to turn things around. But right now, it feels like nothing is going their way.
The Jets also started the season in disappointing fashion, although they have discovered some form in recent weeks.
Remarkably, Craig Deans’ men kicked off their campaign with four straight defeats. But having picked up two wins and two draws in their last four matches, things are suddenly looking a lot brighter for Newcastle.
Not only have the Jets beaten Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne City recently, but they have also kept two clean sheets in their previous two games. Deans’ men may be the third-lowest scorers in the league, yet only four sides boast a better defensive record.
Goalkeeper Jack Duncan has been immense between the sticks following his return to the club, while Valentino Yuel – four goals – and Roy O’Donovan – two goals, one assist – continue to contribute at the other end of the pitch.
If the Jets can pick up where they left off last time out, they will almost certainly cause Victory problems on Sunday.
Melbourne Victory vs. Newcastle Jets Prediction and Pick
Newcastle Jets to Win2.75
Having analyzed both teams, I’m backing Newcastle to claim all three points at AAMI Park. The Jets will be full of confidence right now after going four games unbeaten, while on the flip side, Victory isn’t in a good place at the moment.
Ultimately, the juicy price for the away win is too good to ignore here. I recommend taking advantage of the bookmakers’ generous odds before the prices change.
