Melbourne Victory vs. Adelaide United – A-League, May 23, 2021
The Reds will continue their pursuit of a top-six on Sunday, May 23, when they face off against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.
Following a 2-1 loss to Perth Glory in midweek, Adelaide has only managed to pick up one win in seven matches. Needless to say, Carl Veart’s men will be hoping to get their season back on track against struggling Victory.
The Boys in Blue have won just four of their 23 games this year and head into Sunday’s clash on a four-match losing streak.
If you’re here for my Melbourne Victory vs. Adelaide United prediction, make sure you keep reading. Below, I look at the A-League odds, analyze the teams, and share my betting pick for Sunday’s game.
Melbourne Victory vs. Adelaide Odds
Even the top-rated online sportsbooks appear to have given up hope on Victory. Regardless of the home-field advantage, Steve Kean’s side is the clear outsider here.
It is no secret that Adelaide is enduring a sticky period at the moment. But given that Veart’s men sit 20 points clear of Victory on the A-League ladder, odds of 1.90 for the away win seem very generous.
Melbourne Victory Team News and Analysis
Let’s face it – Melbourne Victory has nothing left to play for this year. The Boys in Blue have endured one of the worst seasons in the club’s history and will be more than happy to see the back of the 2020/21 campaign.
A promising seven-game stretch between late March and early May pointed towards a slight upturn for Kean’s men. They managed to claim two wins and two draws during that period – scoring nine goals along the way.
It is pretty obvious that Victory hasn’t scored enough goals this season. However, the bulk of the team’s struggles have come in defense. In fact, Kean’s men have conceded 57 goals in 23 matches – averaging just under 2.5 goals per game.
Adelaide United Team News and Analysis
After winning just one of their last seven matches, the Reds should view Sunday’s trip to Melbourne as the perfect opportunity to get back on track.
Given Victory’s struggles, it is hardly surprising that Veart’s side has already claimed two wins over the Boys in Blue this year. Adelaide beat Victory 1-0 back in January before recording a 3-1 win at Marvel Stadium in March.
Kusini Yengi gave his side the lead midway through the first half against Perth on Wednesday. However, the South Australians conceded two goals in the final 12 minutes and ended up throwing away all three points.
Although the Reds have lost two of their previous three matches, they will be confident returning to winning ways this weekend. After all, Victory has been nothing short of terrible this season.
My Victory vs. Adelaide Betting Pick
Adelaide United to Win1.90
I expect Adelaide to bounce back and make a big statement on Sunday. Veart’s men can’t afford to lose any more ground in the top-six race, so I can see them laying down a marker against struggling Victory.
Kean’s men have given a decent account of themselves in recent games, but they have ultimately lost five of their last six matches – taking just one point from a possible 18.
No surprises here! The away win is my Melbourne Victory vs. Adelaide United prediction.
