Melbourne Renegades vs. Sydney Thunder – Big Bash League, January 1, 2021
When these two sides met on Boxing Day, the Thunder produced one of the biggest winning margins in Big Bash history – thrashing the Renegades by 129 runs.
The teams clash again on New Year’s Day, with the Gades hoping to end a four-game losing streak and move away from the bottom end of the table.
I discuss the bookies’ odds before sharing my Melbourne Renegades vs. Sydney Thunder prediction and betting pick.
Melbourne Renegades vs. Sydney Thunder Odds
When you consider the previous result between these two teams, it is hardly surprising that 10bet has named the Thunder (1.62) as the favorite to win again on Friday.
Four straight losses have seen the Renegades (2.15) fall nine points behind the Sydneysiders in the standings, so I think odds of 1.62 for the Thunder win are actually pretty generous.
Melbourne Renegades vs. Sydney Thunder Preview
After finishing rock bottom of the table in the previous campaign, many people – including myself – were shocked when the Gades beat the Scorchers by seven wickets in their opening match of BBL 10.
However, the good times didn’t last long.
Michael Klinger’s men suffered an embarrassing 145-run defeat to the Sixers in their second outing, before losing to the Hurricanes and the Thunder soon after.
But the Renegades put in their best display of the season so far in their previous game, giving their fans reason for optimism. The Victorians only lost by two wickets against the Sixers, with the Sydney outfit claiming the win with one ball to spare.
Shaun Marsh (67) and Aaron Finch (39) both starred with the bat, while Mohammad Nabi (2/11), Imad Wasim (2/20), and Kane Richardson (2/21) battled with the ball. If their star man can start performing on a consistent basis, the Gades should cause more teams problems.
Having picked up four wins from their opening five BBL 10 matches, the Thunder find themselves second in the table – one point behind the Sixers.
Shane Bond’s men lost their first game against the Star, but four consecutive victories have enabled them to climb up the ladder and challenge the early frontrunners.
The Thunder has already beaten the Renegades by 129 runs this term, although it could be argued that their 75-run victory over the Stars on Tuesday was their best performance of the season.
Alex Hales (71), Callum Ferguson (51), and Usman Khwaja (37) smashed the Thunder to 219/7 after 20 overs, before Chris Green claimed figures of 4/34 to lead Bond’s side to a convincing win against last season’s finalists.
The Thunder is beginning to look like a complete team. With batting and bowling danger men in the line-up, the off-form Gades are likely to struggle on Sunday.
Melbourne Renegades vs. Sydney Thunder Prediction and Pick
Sydney Thunder to Win1.62
The Renegades just can’t seem to catch a break right now. Four straight losses have left the team low on confidence, and I’m expecting their losing streak to grow to five games this weekend.
On the flip side, the Thunder is on a seemingly unstoppable run at the moment. I’m backing the Sydney outfit to maintain their winning streak with another confident display against the Gades.
