Melbourne City vs. Western United – 2022 A-League Grand Final Pick (Saturday, May 28)

| May 25, 2022 5:52 am PDT

Following six months of thrills and spills, the 2021-22 A-League season will draw to a close this weekend. The Grand Final is set to go down at AAMI Park on Saturday, May 28, with Melbourne City and Western United contesting the all-Victorian decider.

Melbourne City heads into the final as the defending champion, having dispatched Sydney FC in last year’s showpiece. Patrick Kisnorbo’s men have also claimed the past two Premier’s Plates, so they will be confident of defending their crown on Saturday.

That said, Western United finished just four points behind City on the ladder. Although the club is only in its third season of existence, John Aloisi’s boys will fancy their chances of upsetting the A-League odds this weekend.

So, who will win the 2022 A-League Grand Final? Keep reading to discover my Melbourne City vs. Western United prediction and betting pick.

2022 A-League Grand Final Odds

Melbourne City to Win1.71
The Draw3.60
Western United to Win4.60
Melbourne City to Lift the Trophy1.28
Western United to Lift the Trophy3.25
Both Teams to Score1.66
Over 2.5 Goals1.74
Under 2.5 Goals2.05

As you can see, 10Bet regards Melbourne City (1.71) as the clear favorite to win the 2022 A-League Grand Final in normal time – leaving Western United (4.60) as the rank outsider. The price for the draw (3.60) is also sizeable.

If you want to play it safe, you can back your pick to lift the trophy. Your bet will stand land if your team wins after 90 minutes, but you also get the insurance of extra-time and penalties if the final goes the distance.

I have also included some goal-based wagers for you to consider. City is the top scorer this season, while Western boasts one of the best defensive records. That means you could make a profit by steering clear of the moneylines.

Melbourne City vs. Western United Head-to-Head

  • Melbourne City Wins: 5
  • Western United Wins: 3
  • Draws: 1

Melbourne City and Western United have faced each other nine times since Western joined the A-League in 2019. City has the upper hand in the H2H records, having won five of the nine meetings.

It is worth noting, however, that City won all of the first five meetings before failing to win any of the next four. Consequently, Western heads into Saturday’s showdown on a four-game unbeaten streak in this fixture.

Western claimed two 1-0 wins over City earlier this season before the teams played out a 2-2 draw in March. Can Kisnorbo’s men turn things around and win the biggest game of all?

Why is Melbourne City the Grand Final Favorite?

Melbourne City lost just five of their 26 regular-season games on their way to defending their premiership title, picking up 14 wins and seven draws in the process.

Better still, City netted a whopping 55 goals along the way. Thanks largely to the exploits of Jamie Maclaren – who secured his third straight Golden Boot with 15 goals – the premiers are the top scorers by some distance this season.

In the semi-finals, Kisnorbo’s men claimed a 2-1 victory over Adelaide United to punch their ticket to the showpiece. Unsurprisingly, Maclaren bagged the winner in extra-time.

But City is much more than just a one-man team. Let’s not forget that guys like Mathew Leckie (9 goals, 4 assists), Marco Tilio (8 goals, 8 assists), and Andrew Nabbout (7 goals, 9 assists) have starred throughout the campaign.

Kisnorbo’s men have already defended their premiership crown. If the A-League Grand Final odds are to be believed, they should defend their championship title, too.

Can Western United Upset the A-League Odds?

Western United booked their place in the showpiece with a hugely impressive 4-2 aggregate win over Melbourne Victory. After losing the first leg 1-0, they rallied to thrash Victory 4-1 in the second leg.

Lachlan Wales and Dylan Wenzel-Halls both scored last time out, while Aleksandar Prijovic bagged a brace. Prijovic has racked up 12 goals and six assists this season, including three goals and one assist in the finals.

Western finished the regular season with the second-best defensive record in the league. Granted, four teams scored more goals than Aloisi’s boys. But they have remained solid at the back through the campaign.

It is worth pointing out, however, that Aloisi’s boys failed to win any of their final three regular-season games. When you look at the bigger picture, they have managed to win just five of their previous 14 outings.

Of course, they will be brimming with belief after dispatching Victory. But they can’t afford to rest on their laurels. City is a different animal altogether.

2022 A-League Grand Final Prediction

I expect Saturday’s showdown to be a tense and cagey encounter. Given that so much is at stake, both sides are likely to approach the game with caution.

That said, Melbourne City is not a cautious team. Kisnorbo’s men have scored a colossal 57 goals in 28 A-League games this season, meaning they average more than two goals per game. Maclaren and co. won’t remain quiet for very long.

Western has done extremely well to reach the Grand Final, but it could prove to be a step too far for the third-year team. I expect Aloisi’s boys to put up a decent fight, but I’m confident that City will come out on top.

So, what is my A-League Grand Final pick?

I’m backing Melbourne City to seal the deal in normal time. We have seen the defending champions blow countless teams away this season, so I can see them getting the job done inside 90 minutes on Saturday.
