Melbourne City vs. Wellington Phoenix – A-League, May 16, 2021
It is now a question of when, and not if, Melbourne City will clinch their very first A-League Premiers’ Plate.
With only a handful of games remaining in the regular season, Patrick Kisnorbo’s men boast an 11-point lead over second-place Central Coast and are currently on an eight-match unbeaten streak (six wins, two draws).
On Sunday, May 16, City plays their third consecutive home game against the Nix, who are enjoying an impressive six-game unbeaten run of their own (three wins, three draws).
Can the Kiwis upset the A-League odds this weekend? Below, I share my Melbourne City vs. Wellington Phoenix prediction and betting pick.
Melbourne City vs. Wellington Odds
City and Wellington produced a five-goal thriller at the beginning of April, with Kisnorbo’s side edging out a 3-2 victory on that occasion.
Considering that Wellington gave City a serious run for their money last time around, the hefty odds for the draw and the away win are bound to attract plenty of attention here.
But let’s not forget just how impressive City has been over the past few months. The Nix may be in good form, but the champions-elect are on a seemingly unstoppable path to glory right now.
Will Melbourne City Win Again?
I am running out of superlatives to describe this Melbourne City team.
When Adelaide United visited AAMI Park on Thursday, it was supposed to be a test for the hosts.
As it turned out, City tore Adelaide to shreds.
Following first-half strikes from Scott Jamieson and Scott Galloway, the relentless Jamie Maclaren took his tally to 24 goals in 21 appearances with a second-half brace. City sealed an easy 4-1 victory – extending their winning streak to four games in the process.
Kisnorbo’s men have now won 12 of their last 15 matches, recording just two draws and one loss in that time. They have also scored a whopping 45 goals across the hot streak, averaging exactly three goals per game.
Can the Nix Upset the Odds?
Wellington heads into Sunday’s clash on the back of two straight goalless draws, having held Brisbane and Adelaide. When you think about it, that isn’t exactly bad preparation for facing City.
The fact that Ufuk Talay’s men have kept back-to-back clean sheets speaks volumes about their defensive capabilities. However, they are now tasked with preventing the A-League’s most prolific team – and the A-League’s most prolific striker – from humiliating them.
We all know that the Nix have endured a wildly unpredictable campaign up to now, but they have shown signs of consistency in recent weeks.
The New Zealanders’ last defeat came against City six weeks ago. Since then, they have registered three wins and three draws – scoring over 2.5 goals against Western United and Perth Glory.
It goes without saying that Talay’s men will need to be at their absolute best to maintain their unbeaten run this weekend.
My City vs. Wellington Prediction and Pick
Melbourne City to Win1.40
With a 17-point gulf between first-place City and ninth-place Wellington on the A-League ladder, I’m backing Kisnorbo’s men to enhance their title charge with a straightforward victory over the Nix.
Granted, the Kiwis have upped their game of late. But at the end of the day, they would have to produce a miraculous performance to prevent City from sealing five straight wins on Sunday.
