| April 4, 2022 5:03 am PDT

Fresh from thrashing Wellington Phoenix 6-0, Melbourne City will aim to take another step towards securing back-to-back A-League premierships when Sydney FC visits AAMI Park on Wednesday, April 6.

The defending champions find themselves five points clear of second-place Western United atop of the A-League ladder. Better still, they lead fifth-place Sydney FC by a whopping 15 points.

These two sides have produced numerous memorable battles in recent years. Who will come out on top this time around? Keep reading to find my Melbourne City vs. Sydney FC prediction and betting pick.

Melbourne City vs. Sydney FC Betting Odds

Melbourne City to Win1.90
The Draw3.60
Sydney FC to Win3.60

Betway views Melbourne City (1.90) as the favorite to claim all three points on Wednesday. Given the 15-point gulf between the two clubs in the standings, it is difficult to argue with Betway’s viewpoint.

That said, Sydney FC (3.60) will be confident of snatching at least a draw (3.60) at AAMI Park. Following a tricky mid-season spell, the Sky Blues have enjoyed something of a revival of late.

Before we take a closer look at both sides, let’s check out the recent head-to-head record.

Melbourne vs. Sydney Head-to-Head (Last 10 Meetings)

  • Melbourne City Wins: 5
  • Sydney FC Wins: 3
  • Draws: 2

According to the recent H2H stats, Melbourne City has the upper hand. Patrick Kisnorbo’s men have lost just two of their last ten meetings with Sydney FC, picking up five victories along the way.

It is also worth noting that Sydney FC has failed to beat Melbourne City since winning the 2020 Grand Final in extra-time. Since then, City has claimed three wins and one draw in this fixture – scoring over 2.5 goals on two occasions.

In 2020, the Sydneysiders clinched the premiership before beating City in the final. In 2021, City won the premiership before registering a 3-1 win over Sydney FC in the final.

Melbourne City Team News and Analysis

Last weekend, the reigning premiers took another big step towards defending their crown. Thanks to a dominant 6-0 thrashing of Wellington, Melbourne City holds a five-point lead at the A-League summit.

A Finn Surman own goal gave City the lead in the 17th minute. After the break, Mathew Leckie, Andrew Nabbout, and Curtis Good found the back of the net before Marco Tilio came off the bench to bag a quickfire brace.

Not only did Kisnorbo’s men extend their winning run to three games, but they also extended their unbeaten streak to ten games. Indeed, they have registered seven wins and three draws since their last loss.

When you look at the bigger picture, City has suffered a solitary defeat in 13 outings. Having lost just three of their 22 A-League encounters this season, the defending champions are well and truly in the driving seat.

You probably won’t be surprised to learn that Kisnorbo’s men are the top scorers in the competition by some distance. They have netted a colossal 48 goals in 22 outings, meaning they average 2.2 goals per game.

Remarkably, Jamie Maclaren (13 goals, 2 assists), Mathew Leckie (7 goals, 4 assists), Andrew Nabbout (5 goals, 5 assists), and Marco Tilio (4 goals, 6 assists) have all racked up 10+ goal involvements this season.

That is NOT good news for Sydney FC.

Sydney FC Team News and Analysis

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Sydney FC has been one of the most inconsistent sides in the A-League this season. A record of W7-D7-L7 tells you everything you need to know about the team’s inconsistency.

Between mid-January and early March, the Sky Blues managed to record just two wins in 11 games across all competitions. In truth, that run ended their chances of regaining the premiership title.

Although Steve Corica’s boys have upped their game in recent weeks, they still find themselves miles behind Melbourne City.

The 2020 champions have lost only one of their previous six matches in all competitions, securing four wins and one draw along the way. It is also worth pointing out that they claimed a 3-2 victory in last weekend’s Sydney Derby.

Adam Le Fondre opened the scoring last time out before Trent Buhagiar bagged a brace. If the Sky Blues are serious about competing in the final series, their attackers must produce on a consistent basis.

Melbourne City vs. Sydney FC Prediction and Pick

  • Melbourne City to Win

Over the past few years, Melbourne City and Sydney FC have been the best two sides in the A-League. However, the current gulf between the teams is vast. While City is flying high atop the standings, the Sydneysiders are struggling in mid-table.

In all honesty, I’m surprised that City is priced at 1.90 to win this one. Given that City is 15 points ahead of Sydney FC after scoring almost twice as many goals, I recommend jumping on this price before the bookies change their minds.

Central Coast Mariners and Wellington Phoenix go head-to-head on Tuesday. If you enjoyed this betting preview, be sure to check out my prediction and pick for Tuesday’s clash.
