Melbourne City vs. Perth Glory – A-League, Wednesday, March 2, 2022

Melbourne City and Perth Glory go head-to-head at AAMI Park this Wednesday, March 2. Unfortunately for the Western Australians, they find themselves 17 points behind the defending champions.
Perth is one of three teams on 11 points at the foot of the A-League ladder. At the opposite end of the standings, Patrick Kisnorbo’s men are in second place – one point behind first-place Western United.
Keep reading to discover my prediction for Melbourne City vs. Perth Glory. I also share my betting pick for Wednesday’s clash at the end of this post, so make sure you stick around for that.
Melbourne City vs. Perth Glory Odds
It is hardly surprising that all the top A-League betting sites view Melbourne City (1.40) as the out-and-out favorite to win this one. That said, I’m not sure why the price for the Perth win is all the way up at 9.00.
The draw (5.25) is bound to attract plenty of attention, simply due to the high odds. Still, the gulf between these two sides makes it very difficult to bet against City – especially on home soil.
It’s time to take a closer look at the teams. After that, I will provide my Melbourne City vs. Perth Glory prediction and pick.
Melbourne City Team News and Analysis
On Saturday, the reigning champs notched their third straight victory with a 2-1 win over Sydney FC. The game appeared to be heading for a draw until Mathew Leckie netted a stoppage-time winner.
In pretty much every other A-League team, Leckie would be the star of the show. But City has Jamie Maclaren. The three-time Golden Boot winner has bagged ten goals in 14 games this season, emphasizing his ruthlessness.
Kisnorbo’s men have lost just three of their 15 A-League matches in 2021-22, picking up eight wins and four draws along the way. Given that they only managed to win two of their opening seven encounters, their recent resurgence has been a joy to watch.
If it weren’t for the unexpected exploits of Western United, City would be in pole position to secure back-to-back premierships.
Perth Glory Team News and Analysis
Before we go any further, it is worth noting that Perth has played four games fewer than City this season. Even so, that does not explain why the Glory sits 17 points behind Kisnorbo’s side.
Perth heads into Wednesday’s clash on the back of two straight defeats, having lost to both Macarthur FC and Western United last week. Worse still, the Western Australians failed to score a single goal in the process.
It is worth pointing out, however, that Perth boasts the best defensive record in the competition. Of course, they have played four games fewer than some of their rivals. But they can take confidence from that statistic.
On the flip side, the Western Australians are also the lowest scorers in the league. They have netted a measly nine goals in 11 matches, firing a blank on no fewer than six occasions.
Melbourne City vs. Perth Glory Prediction
Kisnorbo’s men have netted a whopping 31 goals in 15 A-League games this season. That means they are averaging more than two goals per game. By contrast, Perth averages 0.8 goals per game in 2021-22.
At the end of the day, City is on a totally different level to the Glory at the moment. Across the past five rounds, the defending champs picked up 12 points. Perth managed to collect just four points during that period.
I’m confident that City will secure a high-scoring victory over Perth. With Maclaren and Leckie leading the way, Kisnorbo’s team looks unstoppable right now.
My Melbourne City vs. Perth Glory Pick
-
Melbourne City to Win1.40
Granted, the price for the Melbourne City win is nothing to write home about. But given the gulf between these two sides, I think odds of 1.40 are actually pretty generous.
Alongside Western United, City is beginning to pull away at the top of the A-League ladder. The visit of struggling Perth provides the reigning champions with the perfect opportunity to enhance their title defense.
