Melbourne City vs. Central Coast Mariners – A-League, March 22, 2021

| March 19, 2021 11:43 am PDT

We have a hugely exciting A-League clash in prospect on Monday, March 22, as in-form Melbourne City hosts high-flying Central Coast at AAMI Park.

A four-game winning streak has seen Patrick Kisnorbo’s men fly up the ladder in recent weeks, although they still find themselves seven points and three places behind the Mariners.

Let’s start by checking out the odds for Monday’s A-League showdown, before getting into my Melbourne City vs. Central Coast Mariners prediction and pick.

Melbourne City vs. Central Coast Mariners Odds

Melbourne City to Win1.71
The Draw3.90
Central Coast Mariners to Win4.45

By now, you should know that Central Coast (4.45) are looking like serious title contenders this season. But Melbourne City (1.71) is the obvious favorite to win this match.

The Mariners have been punching above their weight for a while now, but the best online sports betting sites are clearly aware of the threat that City poses.

Let’s take a closer look at both sides.

Melbourne City Team Analysis

Following a slow start to the season, Melbourne City is finally looking like the team that pushed Sydney FC for both the Premiership and the Championship last year.

Kisnorbo’s men lost four of their opening six games this term, including a 3-2 defeat to the Mariners. But since then, they have clinched four consecutive wins – and it doesn’t feel as though anyone can stop them right now.

City’s hot streak began with a 3-2 victory over Sydney FC, before a 2-0 win against the Wanderers at Bankwest Stadium. However, City’s 6-0 demolition of Victory in the Melbourne Derby is undoubtedly the standout result so far.

Last time out, Jamie Maclaren added another double to his ever-growing tally, as Kisnorbo’s side crushed Macarthur 3-0. The lethal forward now has ten goals and four assists in ten A-League games this term, making him the division’s leading scorer.

Better still, City heads into Monday’s match on the back of three straight shutouts, having prevented WSW, Sydney, and the Bulls from scoring this month.

Assessing the Mariners’ Form

The Mariners looked set to record just their fourth defeat of the season last weekend, with Perth leading 2-1 at Central Coast Stadium. But a last-gasp Matt Simon penalty saw the Yellow & Navy snatch a draw and maintain their remarkable start to the season.

With 12 games gone, Alen Stajcic’s men have eight wins to their name, as well as a three-point lead at the A-League summit.

It has been a genuine all-round performance from Central Coast this year, with Matt Simon (6 goals, 2 assists), Alou Kuol (6 goals, 2 assists), Daniel De Silva (3 goals, 2 assists), and Marcos Urena (2 goals, 2 assists) chipping on a consistent basis.

On top of that, goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has kept five clean sheets – achieving an admirable shutout percentage of 41.7%.

The Mariners can take confidence from the fact that they have already beaten Melbourne City this season. Having said that, Kisnorbo’s team is a completely different animal right now.

Melbourne City vs. Central Coast Prediction and Pick

  • Melbourne City to Win

I have backed the Mariners on numerous occasions this year – and they have rarely let me down! However, I simply can’t see anyone getting the better of Melbourne City at the moment.

Don’t get me wrong, CCM will certainly give Kisnorbo’s men a run for their money. But at the end of the day, I’m expecting City to come out on top.
