Martinique vs. USA – CONCACAF Gold Cup, July 15, 2021

| July 15, 2021 4:54 am PDT

Let’s face it – if Martinique beat the United States this Thursday, July 15, it would surely go down as the biggest CONCACAF Gold Cup upset of all time.

The Caribbean underdogs face the host nation at Children’s Mercy Park, hoping to avoid another humiliating defeat.

Mario Bocaly’s men were thrashed 4-1 by Canada in their opening game of the tournament, underlining their inferiority. Meanwhile, the Stars and Stripes claimed a 1-0 victory over Haiti.

In this Martinique vs. USA betting preview, I discuss the Gold Cup odds, analyze the teams, and provide my prediction and pick for Thursday’s clash.

Martinique’s Chances Are Extremely Slim

Bocaly’s men must have thought they were in dreamland when Emmanuel Riviere gave them a shock lead against Canada last Sunday. However, the good times didn’t last long.

The Group B outsiders found themselves 3-1 down after 26 minutes before conceding another goal in the second half.

It was always going to be difficult for Martinique to compete with Canada. I mean, the team hadn’t played a single match since November 2019 due to the pandemic – and that was evident in Sunday’s performance.

Having failed to win any of their five games before the lay-off, Bocaly’s men now head into Thursday’s clash on a six-match winless run (three draws, three losses).

Check out this video to see how it all fell apart for Martinique last weekend.

Why I’m Backing the USA to Win Comfortably

It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Gregg Berhalter’s boys weren’t at their best last time out. An early Sam Vines goal settled the nerves, but the US failed to add to their tally after that.

Still, the host nation managed to rack up 13 shots throughout the 90 minutes and finished the game with 63% possession. On another day, they probably would have found the back of the net on multiple occasions.

The Stars and Stripes have now lost just one of their last 14 matches in all competitions. In fact, they have only drawn once during that period – picking up 12 wins along the way.

Sunday’s shutout means the USMNT has also kept three clean sheets in their previous four outings. With a rock-solid defense and a vast array of attacking talent, the States look strong in every department.

Gyasi Zardes led the line against Haiti, with Paul Arriola and Jonathan Lewis on either side of the central forward. Considering the lack of goals in the last game, Berhalter may be tempted to include highly-rated striker Daryl Dike in his starting XI on Thursday.

Martinique vs. USA Odds

Martinique to Win34.00
The Draw11.00
USA to Win1.05
Over 2.5 Goals1.36
Over 3.5 Goals2.00
Over 4.5 Goals3.20

When it comes to backing the USA to win, you would need to part ways with a lot of money to make any notable profit. That’s why I recommend considering the goal-based markets for this matchup.

Of course, all the online sportsbooks expect the States to win with ease. But if you want to find the best bets for Martinique vs. USA, I recommend steering clear of the regular moneyline markets.

Score Prediction for Martinique vs. USA

Following a tame display last time out, I can see the US securing a high-scoring victory Martinique. Berhalter’s boys will be eager to lay down a marker after Sunday’s game, so they will be fired up for this one.

With that in mind, a 0-5 win is my Martinique vs. USA prediction. If Canada can score four against the Caribbean underdogs, the Stars and Stripes should be able to bag even more.

My Martinique vs. USA Betting Pick

Pick
  • Over 4.5 Goals
    3.20

Having made my score prediction for Martinique vs. USA, it makes sense to back the over 4.5 goals market here. At odds of 2.00, the over 3.5 goals market is another great option. But I’m confident the US will totally dismantle Bocaly’s side.
