Manchester United vs. Southampton – EPL, February 2, 2021

Manchester United was top of the league when it lost to Sheffield United last week, so will know that a home game against an out of form Southampton is not going to be a guaranteed victory.

But the Saints do need to improve if they are to challenge for a European place – something that looked far more likely before Christmas.

Manchester United vs. Southampton Odds

Manchester United to Win+240
The Draw+336
Southampton to Win+488

At first glance, the odds offered by MyBookie for a Southampton win at Old Trafford do look fairly interesting. But then you do have to remember that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side is currently in the bottom half of the table and has only won one game in the last eight in the league. The draw might be an option, though.

Manchester United vs. Southampton Match Preview

Manchester United needed to come back with something after the embarrassment of losing at home to Sheffield United – and the goalless draw with Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday was probably just about good enough for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It was a keenly fought contest and showed that there is still some fight in a team that looked toothless against the Blades in the game previously. Edinson Cavani should have scored against Arsenal and will probably be given another opportunity here. But it is Bruno Fernandes who needs to find the net again. He is the beating heart of this team but has now not scored in the last five EPL games.

Ralph Hasenhuttl would probably like to have Manchester United’s ‘problems’ at the moment. His Southampton side was looking very good before the turn of the year but has had to deal with COVID and injuries in January and now finds itself in the bottom half of the table and well off the pace.

There was a slight improvement against Aston Villa the weekend – and Hasenhuttl has already made it perfectly clear that he thinks his team should have been better treated by the referee and VAR. But the game ended in another defeat, and the injury list continues to grow. The good news is that Danny Ings looks to be back now.

Manchester United vs. Southampton Prediction and Pick

  • The Draw

The results have not been very good for Southampton recently, but I think that there is still a lot of talent in the squad, and there is every chance that it can go to Old Trafford and come away with a positive result. If Fernandes can be contained – and Southampton’s strikers get a few early chances – the draw might be on here.
