Manchester United vs. Roma – Europa League, April 29, 2021
Manchester United welcomes Roma to Old Trafford on Thursday, April 29, for the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final tie.
The EPL giant is the bookmakers’ favorite to go all the way and lift the trophy next month. Still, the Italian side has more than enough quality to hurt Man Utd.
Can the visitors upset the Europa League odds? I assess both sides’ chances before giving my Manchester United vs. Roma prediction and pick.
Manchester United vs. Roma Odds
As expected, Man Utd (1.51) is the bookies’ clear favorite to win the first leg, leaving Roma (6.00) as the rank outsider.
Regardless of the Red Devils’ superiority, I’m sure the tasty price for the draw (4.15) will attract plenty of attention here. We shouldn’t forget that this is only the first leg.
Before we get to my Man Utd vs. Roma betting pick, let’s take a closer look at the teams.
Man Utd Team News and Analysis
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men extended their unbeaten streak in the EPL to 13 games on Sunday, although they were held to a goalless draw by Leeds United.
Following five straight league wins, Man Utd was frustrated by Marcelo Bielsa’s side. But having taken 16 points from a possible 18 over the past couple of months, they can’t be too disappointed with their recent efforts.
The Red Devils have been immense in the Europa League this season, picking up four wins and two draws in six matches.
Bruno Fernandes has continuously stepped up in big games this term. The attacking midfielders have bagged 24 goals and 14 assists, including seven goals and two assists in 12 European outings.
Mason Greenwood has also discovered some form recently. The teenager has netted five goals in his last five appearances, meaning Solskjaer may be tempted to hand him a starting berth on Thursday.
Roma Team News and Analysis
Following a 3-2 loss to Cagliari on Sunday, Roma heads into Thursday’s clash on a three-match winless in Serie A.
In fact, Paulo Fonseca’s men have only managed to win one of their previous seven league games (two draws, four defeats), leaving them seventh in the Italian top-flight – nine points outside the top four.
While the Giallorossi’s domestic form has been questionable throughout the campaign, the team has consistently picked up positive results in the Europa League. Indeed, the Italians have lost just one of their 12 European matches this term.
Having crushed Braga (5-1) and Shakhtar Donetsk (5-1) in the first two knockout rounds, Roma overcame Dutch giant Ajax (3-2) to book their spot in the last four.
It goes without saying that Fonseca’s men must leave their domestic form at home to get anything from the first leg.
Man Utd vs. Roma First Leg Prediction and Pick
Manchester United to Win1.51
Initially, I was tempted by the massive price for the draw. After considering everything, I’m backing Man Utd to gain a first-leg advantage on Thursday.
Not only are Solskjaer’s men enjoying a lengthy unbeaten streak at the moment, but Roma’s form has also taken a turn for the worse recently. When you add those factors together, odds of 1.51 for the home win seem pretty generous.
