Manchester City vs. Sheffield United – EPL, January 30, 2021

Sheffield United plays its second game in Manchester in the space of four days – and both of them have been against the league leaders.

Manchester City went to the top of the EPL for the first time this season after its midweek win against West Brom – and will now feel as if it can stay there for quite a while.

The odds for a Sheffield United win against Manchester United in the week were much shorter than what BetOnline is offering for a Blades victory here. That probably says more about the home side rather than anything else, but there will be some that are tempted to back the Blades to make it a Manchester double.

Manchester City vs. Sheffield United Match Preview

Manchester City completely dominated its game against West Brom on Tuesday and had scored four goals without reply before the half time whistle blew. Pep Guardiola was so comfortable with the outcome of the game at that point that he took Foden and Gundogan off before the end and still won 5-0.

That victory was the fifth in the last six EPL games with City not conceding – and it is that defensive strength that has replaced the scoring achievements this season. Worrying for the rest of the league will be the fact that City has actually started to find the net a little more regularly now – even with Kevin De Bruyne sidelined through injury.

Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United has been nearly as successful as City in the last three games. But the six points won have quadrupled the tally of two weeks ago. The Blades had been playing better soccer in the last month or so but have only now managed to win games in the manner of last season.

The 2-1 win at Manchester United on Wednesday was fully deserved, even if Sheffield United allowed the host to control the ball for large parts of the game. The tactics will probably be very similar on Saturday at the Etihad – but Chris Wilder’s men will probably not be given quite as much time to take advantage of the little possession it has this weekend.

Manchester City vs. Sheffield United Prediction and Pick

  • Manchester City to Win

I’ve mentioned before how unfair the criticism of Manchester United has seemed at times this season, but the defeat to Sheffield United on Wednesday shows why it exists. Manchester City seems far more adept at dealing with the weaker clubs in the league than its cross-city rival – and a home win on Saturday should definitely be the outcome.
