Manchester City vs. PSG – Champions League, May 4, 2021
Manchester City battled hard for a precious 2-1 victory in the opening leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal. The English side is on the brink of reaching the final of the competition for the first time, but underestimating PSG in the second leg would be a huge mistake.
The French champions have more than enough quality in their squad to overcome the deficit. They have nothing to lose, and Mauricio Pochettino knows the opponent very well. It won’t be easy for City.
I share my thoughts on the chances of both sides in my Man City vs. PSG betting preview. The post includes the latest odds, my analysis of both teams, my prediction, and a free betting pick.
Man City vs. PSG Odds
The Manchester City vs. PSG odds at the top betting sites clearly show that the English side enters the second clash as the favorite to proceed to the final and register a second victory in a row.
That’s not a huge surprise, but I’m sure that the French giants won’t be thinking about the prices when they enter the pitch on Tuesday.
Can Guardiola Learn From the Past?
Despite all of his success as a Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola is yet to reach the Champions League final with the team. There’s a strong argument to be made that he had some of the strongest squads in Europe in certain seasons but failed to make the best of them in Europe.
I believe that his desire to keep it safe in tough moments has been the main issue. We’ve often seen City try a conservative approach in deciding knockout matches, and that’s not how the team is usually set up.
Playing with false nines and with extra men in midfield in the pursuit of better control has been Pep’s downfall in the past. If the Spaniard is tempted again to control the game and play it safe instead of going for it, the result could be the same.
Manchester City has the better team and should be able to push for more goals against PSG. We saw that clearly in the second half of the first leg when Pep’s side was much better and turned it around to win.
The team news suggests that Pep will have all of his players available, so the manager has no excuses. He has to be bolder this time around, but I’ve seen him conservative too many times in the past to trust him to do so on Tuesday.
Pochettino on a Mission
I believe that Mauricio Pochettino has done enough to guarantee himself at least another full season and strong financial backing at the helm of PSG.
And yet, after his early success with the Spurs and the downfall that followed, the manager surely knows that reaching the Last 4 of the Champions League is not an easy task and might not happen again anytime soon.
He will be eager to win the trophy now, and he has the players to turn it around. The likes of Mbappe and Neymar can score at any given moment. It looks like the Frenchman will be playing despite some concerns about his health.
The team needs to look for goals, but controlling the tempo and scoring first are more important tasks. They would put the opposition under immense pressure, and I believe this will be PSG’s game plan.
Pochettino will focus on a steady performance in the midfield that will protect the back four and look for any chance to attack through Neymar and Mbappe.
Man City vs. PSG Betting Pick
Both sides have the reputation of choking in the Champions League when it matters the most, and that works in PSG’s favor this time around. The pressure is on City to perform, and everyone expects them to win.
I’m not sure it would be that easy, especially if Pep again looks to control the match instead of outplaying the opposition.
I can certainly see the French champions scoring first, and that would make the tie pretty wild. The odds of 4.55 for PSG to win are simply too high for a game of such a caliber, and that’s my betting pick for this match.
