Manchester City vs. Porto – Champions League, October 21, 2020

| October 19, 2020 6:14 am PDT

With Olympiacos and Marseille also in Group C, Porto will fancy their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages. However, the Dragons’ 2020/21 Champions League campaign starts with a hugely challenging test.

Porto faces Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, October 21. The English side invariably cruises through the UCL group stage and heads into Matchday 1 as the bookies’ firm favorite.

You can find my Manchester City vs. Porto prediction and betting pick below.

Manchester City vs. Porto Odds

Manchester City to Win 1.25
The Draw 6.15
Porto to Win 9.50

Unsurprisingly, the leading online betting sites are expecting Man City to claim all three points with ease on Wednesday. Porto is the clear outsider, while the price for the draw (6.15) is also massive.

It is difficult to imagine the away side upsetting the odds, although Man City hasn’t been at their free-flowing best this season.

Manchester City vs. Porto Preview

Pep Guardiola’s men kicked off their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wolves, but they were completely humiliated in their next EPL game. A 5-2 thrashing at the hands of Leicester exposed Man City’s defensive frailties, with Riyad Mahrez and Nathan Ake scoring consolation goals.

But after being held to a draw by well-organized Leeds, the Cityzens returned to winning ways against Arsenal on Saturday. Following a below-par start to the season, it was imperative that Man City beat the Gunners. It was by no means a vintage performance, but it’s fair to say that Guardiola’s side deserved the victory.

Having reached the semi-finals last term, Man City is still searching for their first UCL final appearance. But the Premier League giant has only lost two of their 18 group-stage games in the past three years. Although City often struggles in the latter stages of the tournament, the team always seems to get off to a flying start in the opening phases.

On the other hand, Porto enjoyed three consecutive years in the Champions League between 2016/17 and 2018/19 but dropped down into the Europa League last term. However, after reclaiming the Portuguese top-flight title last season, the Dragons are back at Europe’s top table once again.

Sergio Conceicao’s side hasn’t made the most convincing start the new campaign. The team secured back-to-back victories over Porto (3-1) and Boavista (5-0) in September but has only managed to claim on point from a possible six in October. Following a defeat to Maritamo, Porto drew with Sporting last time out.

The Blue and Whites were heading for victory on Saturday, but Luciano Vietto scored a late equalizer to earn Sporting a point. Conceicao would have been eager for his players to travel to England with some momentum, but instead, they are likely to be low on confidence.

Manchester City vs. Porto Pick

  • Manchester City to Win

Unfortunately, you won’t find many prices lower than this on Matchday 1 of the 2020/21 Champions League campaign. But when you consider Man City’s group-stage record in recent years, odds of 1.25 for the home win aren’t too bad.

Porto is likely to put in a stubborn defensive performance on Tuesday, but I’m confident that Man City’s plethora of attacking stars will find a way through and claim the win for the English side.
