Manchester City vs. Borussia Monchengladbach – Champions League, March 16, 2021

| March 16, 2021 10:54 am PDT

It is no exaggeration to say that Borussia Monchengladbach will need to perform a minor miracle in order to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The off-form German team faces high-flying Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, March 16, with Pep Guardiola’s side already leading the tie 2-0.

After looking at the betting odds, I will share my Manchester City vs. Borussia Monchengladbach UCL Round of 16 second leg prediction and pick.

Manchester City vs. Borussia Monchengladbach Odds

Manchester City to Win1.23
The Draw6.50
Borussia Monchengladbach to Win12.00

Well, it’s safe to say that the leading online sportsbooks haven’t sprung any surprises with their prices for this matchup.

Man City (1.23) is the obvious favorite to win on Tuesday, while Gladbach (12.00) heads into the second leg as the clear outsider. But given that City already has one foot in the last eight, the big odds for the draw (6.50) could attract some attention.

Team Assessments

After Man City totally dominated the first leg, I think the Foals can count themselves pretty fortunate to only be 2-0 down at this stage.

The EPL champions-elect completely dominated the German side three weeks ago. Not only did they limit Gladbach to just a single shot on target, but they also enjoyed 61% possession, with goals from Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus doing the damage.

Following victories over West Ham and Wolves, City’s lengthy winning streak was finally brought to an end in the Manchester Derby. However, the team has since bounced back in style.

Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both bagged a brace as City thrashed Southampton 5-2 last week. In their previous outing, Guardiola’s men crushed Fulham 3-0, with Sergio Aguero returning to the scoresheet.

The Cityzens could lose on Tuesday and still progress into the quarter-finals, although that’s not the way they do things. Indeed, I’m expecting them to come out firing at the Etihad.

Having failed to win any of their previous nine games in all competitions, it goes without saying that Marco Rose’s men are not in a good way right now.

A 3-1 loss to Augsburg on Sunday means that Gladbach has now suffered four straight Bundesliga defeats, with five losses and two draws coming since a 4-2 win over Borussia Dortmund back in January.

The Foals managed to secure fourth place in the German top-flight last season, with players like Alassane Plea and Marucs Thuram shining throughout the 2019/20 campaign. But this time around, they find themselves tenth in the table – 11 points shy of the top four.

Gladbach clearly needs a favorable run of fixtures to get back on track. Unfortunately, a trip to face in-form Man City is probably the last thing that Rose and his players want right now.

All I can say is – good luck, Gladbach!

Manchester City vs. Borussia Monchengladbach Prediction

  • Manchester City to Win

Yes, the price for the home win is nothing to get excited about. But when you look at Man City’s recent record, anything other than a home win would be a monumental shock on Tuesday.

If Gladbach was playing some decent soccer at the moment, you could possibly make a case for the away team upsetting the odds. However, the Foals have been nothing short of woeful of late, making City the clear favorite here.
