According to Wednesday’s Major League Soccer odds at BetOnline, two teams – New York City and FC Dallas – are favored to win on their travels. The other eight matchups have home favorites.
New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, Nashville SC, and Los Angeles FC are the heavy home favorites. Minnesota United, Houston Dynamo, Sporting Kansas City, and San Jose Earthquakes are also favored to triumph on home soil.
It’s time to get stuck into my MLS predictions for Wednesday, May 18.
MLS Predictions for Wednesday, May 18
I have decided to cover three standout matchups in detail. When I’m finished with my featured games, I will share the remainder of Wednesday’s Major League Soccer predictions with you.
New York Red Bulls vs. Chicago Fire Prediction
Chicago Fire kicked off their campaign with a five-game unbeaten streak, notching two wins and three draws. Since then, however, the Illinois outfit has arguably been the worst team in the league.
On the flip side, RBNY is currently enjoying a five-game unbeaten run. That run includes last month’s 2-1 victory over Chicago, in which Polish striker Patryk Klimala bagged a brace.
Having lost just two of their 11 MLS outings this season, the Red Bulls find themselves one point behind first-place CF Montreal in the Eastern Conference. Given that Chicago is nine points behind in last place, I expect RBNY to win this one.
Philadelphia Union vs. Inter Miami Prediction
No team has suffered fewer losses than Philadelphia this year. Indeed, Jim Curtin’s boys have lost just one of their 11 MLS matches in 2022 – picking up five wins and five draws in the process.
It is worth noting that Philly heads into this clash on a four-game drawing streak. That said, the visit of struggling Inter Miami provides the Union with the perfect opportunity to return to winning ways.
By contrast, Philly boasts the joint-best defensive record in the East. With a measly nine goals in the goals against column, the U shouldn’t struggle to dispatch lowly Miami.
Vancouver Whitecaps vs. FC Dallas Prediction
This matchup brings together two sides at opposite ends of the Western Conference. While FC Dallas is flying high in second place, Vancouver occupies the fourteenth and final spot in the standings.
The Texans have lost only one of their 11 MLS games this year and head into Wednesday’s clash on a nine-game unbeaten streak. Better still, they boast the third-best offensive record in the West.
It’s a totally different story for the Whitecaps. Not only have they lost six of their ten matches, but they have also conceded 20 goals. You won’t be surprised to learn that I’m backing Dallas to claim all three points on Wednesday.
More Major League Soccer Predictions for Wednesday, May 18
- New York City to Beat DC United
- Minnesota United and LA Galaxy to Draw
- Seattle Sounders to Beat Houston Dynamo
- Nashville SC and CF Montreal to Draw
- Colorado Rapids to Beat Sporting Kansas City
- Los Angeles FC to Beat Austin FC
- San Jose Earthquakes and Portland Timbers to Draw
I’m backing New York City, Seattle, and Colorado to win on the road this week. Elsewhere, I expect LAFC to extend its lead atop the Western Conference with a home victory over Austin.
I can also see three clashes – Minnesota United vs. LA Galaxy, Nashville SC vs. CF Montreal, and San Jose Earthquakes vs. Portland Timbers – ended in a draw. Those games are destined to be close-fought battles.
Top MLS Picks for Wednesday, May 18, 2022
The defending MLS Cup champions have won five of their past six games in all competitions, so I’m backing NYCFC to beat DC United. I’m also backing LAFC to get the better of Austin.
Philadelphia is priced at -225 to beat Inter Miami, but I think we can do better than that. I recommend adding the –1 handicap onto the Union victory to boost the odds to +130.
Lastly, I expect San Jose and Portland to dish up at least three goals between them. This season, the Earthquakes’ MLS games average 4.1 goals, while the Timbers’ games average three goals. Need I say more?
