Major League Soccer Predictions and Picks – Sunday, May 1 (2022)

| April 28, 2022 6:57 am PDT

Sunday’s Major League Soccer schedule comprises three games. In the early kick-off, New York City hosts San Jose. We will then see Nashville and Philadelphia go head-to-head before Minnesota visits LAFC.

You can find my MLS predictions for Sunday below, as well as my recommended betting picks for all three games. Before we get to those predictions and picks, let’s break down the MLS odds for Sunday, May 1.

MLS Odds for Sunday, May 1 (2022)

  • New York City (-225) vs. San Jose Earthquakes (+550)
  • Nashville SC (+125) vs. Philadelphia Union (+260)
  • Los Angeles FC (-210) vs. Minnesota United (+550)

As you can see, BetOnline expects New York City to make light work of San Jose. If Sunday’s Major League Soccer odds are to be believed, we should also see an easy win for LAFC over Minnesota.

However, the other game is not that straightforward. Although Nashville is favored to beat Philadelphia, the Union looks set to give the Boys in Gold a run for their money in Tennessee.

MLS Predictions for Sunday, May 1

Are you ready for Sunday’s Major League Soccer predictions? Let’s get this show on the road!

New York City vs. San Jose Earthquakes Prediction

To say that San Jose has made a disappointing start to the 2022 campaign would be an understatement. Having won just one of their eight matches, the Earthquakes find themselves second from bottom in the Western Conference.

On top of that, San Jose has the worst defensive record in the entire league. The Quakes have conceded a whopping 20 goals this season, allowing over 2.5 goals on four separate occasions.

Over the in the Eastern Conference, New York City occupies seventh place. Although the 2021 MLS Cup champions have struggled to settle this year, they have still managed to accumulate four points more than San Jose.

Following a 6-0 thrashing of Real Salt Lake, the Bronx Blues secured a crazy 5-4 victory against Toronto FC last weekend. Given San Jose’s defensive woes, NYCFC looks set to seal another high-scoring win on Sunday.

Prediction: New York City to Beat San Jose Earthquakes

Nashville SC vs. Philadelphia Union Prediction

In all honesty, it is difficult to predict exactly how this matchup will pan out. Nashville is always strong on home soil, but Philadelphia is sitting pretty atop the Eastern Conference.

Jim Curtin’s men have lost only of their eight outings this year, picking up five wins and two draws in the process. Better still, they have conceded a measly five goals – meaning they have the joint-best defensive record in the league.

Nashville sits six points behind Philly in the overall standings after registering three wins, two draws, and three losses. It is worth noting that Nashville has already dispatched Seattle, Columbus, and Sporting Kansas City in 2022.

I can see this clash ending in a draw. Both sides are strong in defense, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they cancel each other out at Geodis Park.

Prediction: Nashville SC and Philadelphia Union to Draw

Los Angeles FC vs. Minnesota United Prediction

We may only be two months into the 2022 MLS season, but LAFC already looks like a genuine Supporters’ Shield contender.

Thanks largely to the exploits of Carlos Vela (4 goals, 3 assists), Cristian Arango (4 goals, 1 assist), and Danny Musovski (3 goals, 1 assist), the Californians have won six of their opening eight matches – scoring 19 goals along the way.

Granted, Minnesota has made a solid start to the season – losing just twice in eight outings. But Adrian Heath’s men still find themselves five points behind the Western Conference leaders.

LAFC currently boasts the second-best goal difference in Major League Soccer (+11). That tells you everything you need to know about the team’s strength at both ends of the field. With that in mind, I’m backing LAFC to dispatch Minnesota without any problems.

Prediction: Los Angeles FC to Beat Minnesota United

Top MLS Picks for Sunday, May 1

  • New York City vs. San Jose Earthquakes – New York City to Win & Over 2.5 Goals (-111)
  • Nashville SC vs. Philadelphia Union – Under 2.5 Goals (-143)
  • Los Angeles FC vs. Minnesota United – Los Angeles FC –1 Handicap (+115)

New York City crushed RSL 6-0 before beating TFC 5-4 last weekend. The defending MLS Cup champs come up against the weakest backline in the league on Sunday, so I can see them record another high-scoring victory.

Nashville and Philadelphia have played a combined total of 16 MLS games this year, five of which have produced over 2.5 goals. For that reason, I’m backing them to dish up under 2.5 goals between them this weekend.

LAFC is priced at just –210 to beat Minnesota. Since the Californians have the second-best goal difference in the league, backing them to beat the Loons by at least two goals makes a lot of sense. Plus, the odds are way more attractive.
