MLS Rivalry Week draws to a close on Sunday, July 17. But don’t worry – there is still time for a few more grudge matches.
With the Hudson River Derby, the Hell Is Real Derby, and a Cascadia Cup clash between Portland and Vancouver on Sunday’s Major League Soccer schedule, there are bound to be plenty of fireworks this weekend.
Follow the link below to check out my MLS predictions and betting picks for Saturday, July 16. In this post, however, I will be focusing solely on Sunday’s MLS predictions and picks. Let’s go!
New York Red Bulls (+120) vs. New York City (+215)
Columbus Crew (-115) vs. FC Cincinnati (+322)
Nashville SC (+135) vs. Los Angeles FC (+200)
Real Salt Lake (-122) vs. Sporting Kansas City (+360)
San Jose Earthquakes (+105) vs. Houston Dynamo (+240)
Portland Timbers (-140) vs. Vancouver Whitecaps (+405)
Let’s start by examining Sunday’s MLS odds. I found these odds at BetOnline , which is undoubtedly one of the best online sportsbooks for wagering on Major League Soccer.
The Red Bulls are favored to claim the New York bragging rights, but the defending MLS Cup champions won’t go down without a fight. Elsewhere, Columbus and Portland are expected to win their respective derbies.
Atlanta, Nashville, Real Salt Lake, and San Jose are favored to win on home soil this weekend. That said, several teams – including high-flying LAFC – will fancy their chances of upsetting the MLS odds. Ready to bet now? Use the odds above or others at the best MLS betting sites below.

MLS Predictions for Sunday, July 17
Are you ready for my MLS predictions for Sunday, July 17? Let’s get this show on the road!
Atlanta United to Beat Orlando City
Atlanta secured a much-needed victory in midweek, beating Real Salt Lake 2-1 thanks to a first-half brace from Ronaldo Cisneros. Having ended their four-game winless run, the Five Stripes will be confident of dispatching Orlando.
The Lions have been wildly inconsistent of late, registering two wins, three draws, and three losses across their past eight MLS outings. For that reason, I can see them falling to the rejuvenated Five Stripes on Sunday.
New York Red Bulls and New York City to Draw
Second-place New York City and third-place RBNY are separated by just two points in the Eastern Conference. Granted, NYCFC has a game in hand on the Red Bulls. But it remains tight at the top.
The Red Bulls have won four of their previous seven MLS games, recording one draw and two losses in the process. Meanwhile, the 2021 MLS Cup champs have claimed three wins, three draws, and one defeat.
It is also worth noting that both sides have conceded 21 goals this season. Although NYCFC’s Valentin Castellanos is the league’s top scorer, I expect the Hudson River Derby to end in a draw.
Columbus Crew to Beat FC Cincinnati
Columbus has turned the corner in recent weeks. Between March and May, the Crew managed to pick up a solitary victory in nine outings. Fast-forward to today – Caleb Porter’s team is on a seven-game unbeaten streak.
On the other side of Ohio, Pat Noonan’s boys have only managed to win one of their past eight games. Granted, they have drawn five of their previous six. But they can’t seem to turn draws into wins at the moment.
I’m backing Columbus to claim the Ohio bragging rights at Lower.com Field.
Los Angeles FC to Beat Nashville SC
If you glance at the Western Conference standings, you will see that third-place Nashville sits just behind second-place LAFC. When you look a little closer, however, you will notice that LAFC leads Nashville by nine points!
The Californians have lost only four of their 19 games this year, securing 12 wins and three draws along the way. As for the team from Tennessee, they have recorded eight wins, six draws, and six defeats.
Fresh from getting the better of the Galaxy, I’m confident that Steve Cherundolo’s boys will notch their fourth victory in five outings this weekend.
Real Salt Lake to Beat Sporting Kansas City
To say that Sporting Kansas City is enduring a below-par campaign would be a colossal understatement. Having won just five of their 21 games this season, the Wizards find themselves rock bottom of the Western Conference.
At the opposite end of the standings, Real Salt Lake sits fourth – ten points clear of SKC. Attackers like Sergio Cordova, Justin Meram, and Jefferson Savarino will be licking their lips at the prospect of exploiting the worst defense in the West.
San Jose Earthquakes to Beat Houston Dynamo
It is no exaggeration to say that Houston is in free fall. Following a run of five defeats in seven games, the Texans have slipped to eleventh in the Western Conference.
On the flip side, the Earthquakes have upped their game of late. Not only have they won two of their last three games, but they have also avoided defeat in eight of their previous ten.
There was a time earlier in the season when the Quakes were miles behind the Dynamo. Now, they are level on 22 points. I’m backing the Quakes to continue their hot streak when the Texans come to town.
Portland Timbers to Beat Vancouver Whitecaps
Portland heads into this clash on a five-game unbeaten streak, having sealed three wins and two draws since their last loss. After thrashing Seattle 3-0 last time out, the Timbers will be confident of dispatching their other Cascadia Cup rival this weekend.
The Whitecaps have claimed two wins, two draws, and two losses across their past six outings – highlighting their inconsistency. They also have the third-worst defensive record in the West, so I expect them to struggle against free-scoring Portland.
Atlanta United vs. Orlando City – Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 Goals (+110)
Nashville SC vs. Los Angeles FC – Los Angeles FC to Win (+200)
San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo – San Jose Earthquakes to Win (+105)
Both teams have scored in 13 of Atlanta’s 19 MLS games this year (68%). On top of that, 15 of the Five Stripes’ clashes have produced over 2.5 goals (79%). With that in mind, I expect their game against Orlando to be wild!
I’m struggling to figure out why LAFC is priced at +200 to beat Nashville. Of course, the Californians are away from home this weekend. But they have only suffered four defeats all season. I recommend jumping on this generous price before the bookies change their minds.
I’m also backing San Jose to get the better of Houston on Sunday. The Quakes have won two of their last three games, while the Texans have lost five of their previous seven.
