There is a tasty all-Californian battle between LAFC and San Jose to look forward to, as well as a showdown between the previous two Supporters’ Shield winners – New England and Philadelphia. In truth, there are standout matchups across the schedule.
Today, I will be taking you through my MLS predictions for Saturday, May 28. I will also be going over the top MLS picks for Saturday, so make sure you stick around until the end of this post!

- Sporting Kansas City (-130) vs. Vancouver Whitecaps (+350)
- Real Salt Lake (+110) vs. Houston Dynamo (+255)
I took these odds from the BetOnline sportsbook. As you can see, only two teams – Chicago Fire and New York City – are favored to secure road wins on Saturday. The other ten games have home favorites.
LAFC, Atlanta United, New York Red Bulls, CF Montreal, and Sporting Kansas City are the heavy home favorites. Elsewhere, New England, Orlando City, Inter Miami, Colorado Rapids, and Real Salt Lake are also favored to win on home soil.
MLS Predictions for Saturday, May 28
Without further ado, let’s dive into my Major League Soccer predictions for Saturday, May 28. I have decided to take an in-depth look at four standout clashes. Once my featured games are out the way, I will provide the rest of Saturday’s MLS predictions.
Los Angeles FC vs. San Jose Earthquakes Prediction
This matchup brings together the Western Conference leader and, well, San Jose.
Steve Cherundolo’s men have lost just three of their 13 games this year, picking up eight wins and two draws along the way. By contrast, the Earthquakes find themselves down in eleventh place – 12 points behind LAFC – after winning three of their 13 outings.
As per my MLS Cup odds update, Cherundolo’s men are in pole position to lift the trophy in 2022. Needless to say, they shouldn’t struggle to dispatch lowly San Jose this weekend.
Atlanta United vs. Columbus Crew Prediction
Columbus heads into Week 14 on a three-game winless run. After drawing with New England earlier this month, the Crew suffered back-to-back 2-0 losses against New York City and LAFC.
When you look at the bigger picture, the 2020 MLS Cup champions have managed to win just one of their past ten games across all competitions. They even suffered an embarrassing defeat to USL Championship side Detroit in the US Open Cup.
On the flip side, Atlanta comes into this clash on a three-game unbeaten streak. Following a 4-1 thrashing of Chicago, the Five Stripes held both New England and Nashville to a draw. They should return to winning ways on Saturday.
Inter Miami vs. Portland Timbers Prediction
It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Inter Miami and Portland Timbers have been two of the most inconsistent teams in Major League Soccer this season. Funnily enough, both sides find themselves tenth in the respective conferences.
As for the Timbers, they head into Week 14 on the back of two straight losses. Having fallen to struggling San Jose and Philly, the 2021 MLS Cup runners-up look set to suffer a third successive defeat this weekend.
Minnesota United vs. New York City Prediction
There is absolutely no denying that New York City is the most in-form team in MLS right now. Not only have the 2021 MLS Cup champs won each of their last five games, but they have also won eight of their previous nine.
Thanks to the exploits of stars like Valentin Castellanos (7 goals, 1 assist) and Thiago Andrade (4 goals, 1 assist), the Bronx Blues are also the joint-top scorers in the Eastern Conference.
The Loons trail NYCFC by five points in the overall standings after winning just five of their opening 13 games this season. Having lost three of their past five MLS outings, they are likely to suffer another defeat against high-flying NYCFC.
More Predictions for MLS Games on Saturday
- New York Red Bulls to Beat DC United
- Toronto FC and Chicago Fire to Draw
- CF Montreal to Beat FC Cincinnati
- New England Revolution and Philadelphia Union to Draw
- Orlando City to Beat FC Dallas
- Colorado Rapids and Nashville SC to Draw
- Sporting Kansas City to Beat Vancouver Whitecaps
- Real Salt Lake to Beat Houston Dynamo
I expect the Red Bulls, Montreal, Orlando, Kansas City, and Real Salt Lake to triumph on home soil this weekend. Although Kansas City and Vancouver are the West’s bottom two teams, the Wizards sit two points above the Whitecaps.
Over in the East, Toronto and Chicago are the bottom two sides. I can see that clash being one of three draws on Saturday, along with New England vs. Philadelphia and Colorado vs. Nashville.
Top MLS Picks for Saturday, May 28
Each of Atlanta’s previous seven games have dished up over 2.5 goals. Given that Columbus has conceded two goals in each of their last three outings, they should produce at least three goals between them.
Montreal is quickly becoming the BTTS specialist. Both teams have scored in seven of Montreal’s past eight MLS outings, so I expect goals at both ends of the field when the Canadians host Cincy.
In my eyes, the prices for Orlando to beat Dallas and New York City to beat Minnesota are definitely worth taking advantage of. Thanks to NYCFC’s away status, their odds are seriously attractive.
