Mahoning Valley Race Course Betting Picks – Tuesday, January 12, 2021

| January 11, 2021 12:50 pm PDT

Mahoning Valley Race Course continues its thoroughbred racing schedule for the last week of 2020, and you’ll find the usual maiden, allowance, and claiming races on the track’s nine-race card.

Don’t forget that spectators are welcome at the track. Expect temperatures in the upper 30s and winds around nine mph under partly cloudy skies.

This might be a good time to mention that you can also find Mahoning Valley’s nine-race card for Tuesday — Including entries, jockeys, and wagering options — at one of our best horse racing betting sites.

Read on for my Mahoning Valley Race Course picks and tips for Tuesday, January 12, 2021.

Pick for Race 3 at Mahoning Valley Race Course

This is a maiden special weight race for Ohio-bred three-year-olds and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $27,500.

I’m going with the fourth-favored (9/2) entry in this race — Howie’s Angel, ridden by top jockey Edgar Paucar. This five-year-old gelding moneyed three of his six career starts, giving him a better record than that of the morning line favorite.

I see no long-odds entries among this nine-horse field that look capable of doing more than following the rest of the horses across the finish line.

  •  Win: Howie’s Angel 9/2

Picks for Race 8 at Mahoning Valley Race Course

This is an allowance race for Ohio-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $29,000.

I like the third-favored (5/1) entry here — Kist, with T.D. Houghton in the irons. This four-year-old filly moneyed five of her nine career starts, winning one.

And I like the 20/1 longshot, Rock Star Lady, with Luan Machado aboard, for a value show wager. This three-year-old filly moneyed three of her six career starts, winning one. It’s important to note of three of her six starts were in stakes races, and also that she moneyed in one of those — the Glacial Princess Stakes — in November at Mahoning.

  •  Win: Kist 5/1
  •  Show: Rock Star Lady 20/1

Pick for Race 9 at Mahoning Valley Race Course

This is a maiden special weight race for three-year-old Ohio-bred fillies running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $27,500.

I have to agree with the morning line here and go with the 5/2 favorite — Fricka, ridden by Luis R. Rivera. This three-year-old filly moneyed four of her five career starts.

The morning line says there are four 20/1 longshots in this race, and wouldn’t you know it — not a single one looks likely to finish in the money. We both know that saving money is the very least exciting way to win, but let’s call it that anyway, m’kay?

  •  Win: Fricka 5/2
