Mahoning Valley Race Course gives us a full array of maiden, allowance, and claiming matches on with its eight-race card for Wednesday.

Remember that while I review the three richest races here, you can find Mahoning Valley’s entire eight-race card for Wednesday at one of our best online racebooks.

Read on for my Mahoning Valley Race Course picks and tips for Wednesday, February 24, 2021.

Pick for Race 3 at Mahoning Valley Race Course

This is an allowance race for three-year-old Ohio-bred fillies running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $29,000.

I’m agreeing with the morning line in this race and betting on the 5/2 favorite — Ballroom Blitz, with Christian Pilares in the irons. This filly finished in the money two of her three career starts, taking first place at Thistledown to break her maiden last July, then scoring a second-place finish in October in the John W. Galbreath Stakes (Black Type) at Mahoning.

I don’t see any entries here with long enough odds to make a value show wager possible, so we save our long money.

  •  Win: Ballroom Blitz 5/2

Pick for Race 6 at Mahoning Valley Race Course

This is an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $21,200.

I was going to back the favorite in this race, as well, but the top half of the coupled entry convinced me otherwise, so now I’m betting on the fourth-favored (5/1) Wink and a Nod, ridden by Charle Oliveros. This five-year-old gelding moneyed 15 of his 28 career starts, winning seven.

Granted, the 8/5 favorite has better speed figures — too bad those didn’t translate into a better starting record.

There are a couple of longshots in this race, but I don’t think either of them are going to make it to the finish line in time for payday.

  •  Win: Wink and a Nod 5/1

Picks for Race 8 at Mahoning Valley Race Course

This is an allowance race for Ohio-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $30,500.

I’m sticking with the 3/1 morning line favorite in this race — Gonnabegood, with Luis Raul Rivera aboard. This three-year-old filly moneyed six of her eight career starts, winning two. Her money finishes include a second in the Jim Morgan Memorial Tah Dah Stakes (Black Type) at Belterra Park last July and a third in the Best of Ohio Miss Ohio Stakes (Black Type) at Thistledown in August.

And I like one of the 20/1 longshots in this race — Nan’s Rose, ridden by Yuri Yaranga — for a value show wager. This four-year-old filly moneyed seven of her 14 career starts, winning two.

  •  Win: Gonnabegood 3/1
  •  Show: Nan’s Rose 20/1
