Mahoning Valley Race Course Betting Picks – Tuesday, February 2, 2021

| February 1, 2021 2:27 pm PDT

Mahoning Valley Race Course continues the thoroughbred racing week with eight maiden, allowance, and claiming matches for our wagering and general loud-cheering entertainment.

If you intend to watch the races live at the track, dress warmly: The forecast says the day the races will be under mostly cloudy skies, with highs around freezing temperatures and winds around 15 miles an hour.

Now might be a good time to mention that rather than attending the track in person, you may want to visit one of our top online racebooks, where you can find Mahoning Valley’s entire eight-race card for Tuesday — including entries, jockeys, and wagering options.

In either case, read on for my Mahoning Valley Race Course picks and tips for Tuesday, February 2, 2021.

Pick for Race 2 at Mahoning Valley Race Course

This is a maiden special weight race for Ohio-bred three-year-old fillies running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $27,500.

I like the second-favored (5/2) Angelina, with Sonny Leon in the irons. This filly moneyed one her two career starts.

There’s an actual 20/1 longshot in this seven-horse race, but I don’t see a paying finish for that horse, even with jockey Edgar Paucar’s guidance.

  • Win: Angelina 5/2

Pick for Race 4 at Mahoning Valley Race Course

This is an allowance race for three-year-olds and upwards, running a distance of 5-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $21,800.

I’m backing the third-favored (6/1) entry here — Shadow Surprise, with Christian P. Pilares aboard. This seven-year-old gelding finished in the money 20 of his 43 career starts, winning 12.

There’s a single 20/1 longshot in this race, and that ain’t gonna happen, so save your money.

  • Win: Shadow Surprise 6/1

Pick for Race 5 at Mahoning Valley Race Course

This is a maiden special weight race for Ohio-bred three-year-olds running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $27,500.

I’m sticking with the 5/2 morning line favorite for this race — Ranchero, ridden by Hector L. Rosario, Jr. This gelding moneyed one of his four career starts.

The longest odds in this eight-horse run are 10/1 (the morning line had three entries at those odds). None of them look likely to finish anywhere near the money.

  • Win: Ranchero 5/2

More Racing Picks for Tuesday

Mahoning Valley may have been a bit withholding with the long-odds value show prospects, but don’t forget I reviewed two other tracks for Tuesday:
