Macarthur FC vs. Melbourne City – A-League, April 24, 2021
When Melbourne City visits Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday, April 24, the Bulls will be hoping to avoid a repeat of what happened when they faced Patrick Kisnorbo’s side last month.
Indeed, City crushed Macarthur 3-0 at AAMI Park, with Jamie Maclaren (unsurprisingly) netting a brace.
Fifth-place Macarthur is only four points behind first-place City on the A-League ladder, although it is worth noting that Kisnorbo’s men have two games in hand over the Bulls.
After looking at the odds and assessing the teams, I will share my Macarthur FC vs. Melbourne City prediction and pick.
Macarthur FC vs. Melbourne City Odds
Following another rampant Melbourne Derby win last weekend, 10bet views Melbourne City (1.68) as the clear favorite to claim all three points on Saturday.
In all honesty, I wasn’t expecting the price for the Macarthur win (4.50) to be as high as it is. But when you consider the form of both sides, the bookies’ have arguably got this just right.
Can Macarthur Upset the Odds?
It’s fair to say that Macarthur’s maiden A-League campaign has been packed with ups and downs. Unfortunately, the team is going through a sticky patch at the moment.
Having claimed three straight victories over Western United, Wellington, and Perth earlier in the month, the inconsistent Bulls now head into Saturday’s clash on a three-match winless streak.
Macarthur’s latest downturn began with a 2-1 loss to Brisbane before Adelaide beat Ante Milicic’s team 3-1. Last time out, the Bulls came from behind to lead the Jets, only to throw away their advantage and draw 2-2.
Thankfully, the team’s recent slump doesn’t seem to have affected Matt Derbyshire.
As long as Derbyshire continues to add to his impressive tally, the Bulls will continue to cause their opponents problems.
Will Melbourne City Win Again?
While Derbyshire is enjoying a promising debut A-League campaign, Maclaren is having the season of his life.
Before last weekend’s 7-0 thrashing of the Victory, Maclaren had scored a whopping 14 goals in 15 matches. Following a mammoth five-goal haul in the Derby, the lethal striker’s tally for the season now sits at 19 goals and five assists in 16 appearances.
Of course, soccer is not a one-man game. But Maclaren has been doing his best to change that.
Looking at the bigger picture, Kisnorbo’s men have only lost one of their previous ten matches – picking up eight wins and one draw in that time.
You probably won’t be surprised to learn that they are also the highest scorers in the A-League – and they boast the third-best defensive record, too.
Macarthur FC vs. Melbourne City Prediction and Pick
Melbourne City to Win1.68
The Bulls have bounced back from plenty of bad spells throughout their debut A-League season. However, the visit to high-flying City doesn’t exactly present them with a good chance to return to winning ways, does it?
At the end of the day, Kisnorbo’s men have been ruthless in recent weeks. The race for the premiership is firmly in their grasp, so I can’t see them slipping up against Macarthur.
