Luxembourg vs. Portugal – World Cup Qualifier, March 30, 2021

| March 29, 2021 12:08 pm PDT

The reigning European champions will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing draw to Serbia when they visit Luxembourg on Tuesday, March 30.

Portugal was denied victory in dramatic circumstances last time out, while Luxembourg managed to seal a rare win over Ireland. Following a chaotic start in Group A, the question on everyone’s lips is – can Luxembourg upset the World Cup qualifying odds?

Keep reading to see my Luxembourg vs. Portugal prediction and pick.

Luxembourg vs. Portugal Odds

Luxembourg to Win16.00
The Draw7.75
Portugal to Win1.20

At first glance, there is nothing particularly special about these odds. We all know that Portugal should win this match, meaning Luxembourg is the deserved outsider.

But when you couple Luxembourg’s rare win in the previous round with Portugal’s shaky start to the qualifying campaign, it is impossible not to think about a potential upset here.

Before I settle on my Luxembourg vs. Portugal betting pick, let’s take a closer look at the teams.

Can Luxembourg Upset the Odds?

Given that Luc Holtz’s men headed into their clash with Ireland on a four-match winless run, nobody expected them to kick off their qualifying campaign on a positive note. After all, Ireland’s starting XI was packed with EPL players, while the Luxembourg side didn’t feature any high-profile names.

But thanks to an 85th-minute Gerson Rodrigues strike, Luxembourg managed to claim an unexpected 1-0 victory.

The Red Lions only saw 37% possession in Dublin on Saturday, and Ireland continuously mounted attacks on the visitors’ goal. But having fended off the home side for much of the match, Luxembourg eventually seized the moment.

It is worth noting that each of Luxembourg’s last three games have produced under 1.5 goals. Holtz’s men don’t score many goals, but they seem to have developed a knack for keeping their opponents out recently.

Of course, Portugal will pose more of a threat than Ireland. But the Group A underdogs will be brimming with belief on Tuesday.

Portugal Analysis and Team News

After narrowly scraping past Azerbaijan on Matchday 1, Portugal found themselves leading Serbia 2-0 at half-time on Saturday. It appeared as though normal service had been resumed, yet the Euro 2016 champs crumbled after the break.

Following Diogo Jota’s first-half brace, Portugal conceded two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Cristiano Ronaldo thought he’d won the game for his team right at the death, but his effort was ultimately disallowed.

Portugal’s frustrations were clear for all to see, with Ronaldo storming off the pitch full-time.

Fernando Santo’s men have made an unconvincing start to their qualifying campaign for all their world-class talent. Having almost failed to beat Azerbaijan last week, they could have quite easily lost to Serbia on Saturday.

The reigning European champions will view Tuesday’s trip to Luxembourg as the ideal opportunity to get back on track. However, the hosts won’t make life easy for the visitors.

My Prediction and Pick

  • Portugal to Win

Yes, the massive odds for both the home win and the draw are bound to attract plenty of attention here. But at the end of the day, I just can’t see Portugal failing to return to winning ways in Luxembourg.

The Red Lions will probably still be buzzing following their memorable win over Ireland. But let’s face it – Ronaldo and co. should be able to get the better of the European minnows with ease.
