Ludogorets vs. Tottenham Hotspur – Europa League, November 5, 2020

Spurs will be aiming to bounce back from last week’s disappointing defeat to Antwerp when they face Ludogorets in Bulgaria on Thursday, November 5.

Tottenham currently sits second in Group J on three points, while Ludogorets is bottom of the group without a single under the belt.

Despite Jose Mourinho’s side losing on their travels last week, the top online sportsbooks still view Tottenham (1.36) as the clear favorite to win this one.

Even with home advantage, Ludogorets (7.25) isn’t being given much of a chance by the bookies. After all, the gulf in quality between these two sides is vast.

It is fair to say that Europe has not been a happy hunting ground for Ludogorets this season. The Eagles suffered a 2-1 defeat to Antwerp on Matchday 1, and despite Elvis Manu’s best efforts, they were beaten 4-3 by LASK last week.

Manu netted a hat-trick on Matchday 2, but he was unable to prevent his side from picking up back-to-back defeats in the Europa League. Stanislav Genchev’s men are the only side without a point to their name in Group J, although they are the joint-top scorers.

Back home, it has been very much business as usual for Ludogorets. The Eagles have only lost one of their ten domestic games this term and sit top of the Bulgarian top-flight. However, the Europa League is a big step-up, and the team has clearly struggled to carry their domestic form onto the European stage.

Tottenham has also made a promising start to their domestic season. Mourinho’s men have only lost one of their seven EPL games in 2020/21, and they are also the top scorers in the division, with frontrunner Liverpool just two points ahead.

Spurs kicked off their Europa League campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over LASK, yet they suffered an unexpected 1-0 defeat to Antwerp on Matchday 2. Mourinho made it clear that he was not happy with the performance, so he isn’t likely to rest as many first-team players on Thursday.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min both started on the bench in Belgium, but Mourinho could be tempted to start the star duo in Bulgaria. Kane has 11 goals and nine assists in 12 appearances this term, while Son has racked up ten goals and four assists in 11 outings.

Even without Kane and Son, Tottenham should be far too strong for Ludogorets. But after last week’s loss, Spurs can’t really afford anymore slip-ups.

Group J is already wide open, so Tottenham will know that only a win will be good enough on Matchday 3. With Antwerp three points ahead and Ludogorets three points behind, the English side needs to put in a big performance in Bulgaria.

I’m sure the Eagles will pose Spurs a few problems, but there is no denying that Tottenham has more than enough quality to come away with all three points on Thursday.
