Loyola Chicago Ramblers vs. Oregon State Beavers – College Basketball, March 27, 2021

| March 26, 2021 9:12 am PDT

Not many expected to see Loyola Chicago and Oregon State pitted against one another in the Sweet 16 of the Midwest Region. But oh, the joy of March Madness.

The 8th-seeded Ramblers are set to take on the 12th-seeded Beavers with a berth in the Elite 8 in plain sight. Let’s work our way toward a Loyola Chicago vs. Oregon State prediction by assessing what each team needs to do to continue marching on.

How the Ramblers Can Win

It starts by continuing to play extraordinary defense. Loyola isn’t the most athletic team in the tournament, and they’re certainly not the biggest, but you won’t find any program that’s more disciplined on the defensive end.

The Ramblers surrender just 55.8 points per game – that’s #1 in college basketball. They’ve held the Yellow Jackets and Fighting Illini to a combined 29.2% shooting from outside (7/24) and have controlled the turnover battle in each game. Forget about the fact that they play in the Missouri Valley Conference; this team walloped top-seeded Illinois after easily dispatching the ACC Tournament champions.

As tremendous as they are on D, Loyola Chicago clocks in 4th in the nation in FG % (50.4%) and can lean on one of the best players left in the bracket.

How the Beavers Can Win

Most people are counting the Beavers out, and that’s fine with Wayne Tinkle. Nobody expected them to emerge from the Pac-12 Tournament, yet they stamped their ticket to the dance after successive wins against UCLA, Oregon, and Colorado. Two of those teams are still alive.

On the heels of double-digit victories against Tennessee and Oklahoma State, I’d say that Oregon State is fairly comfortable entering a game as the underdog. What’s been most impressive about watching the Beavers go to work is their ability to win games in a variety of different ways.

Against the Vols, Oregon State assisted on 20 of their 27 field goals and shot 10/21 from three-point land. They got it done by sharing the load offensively and raining threes from outside—quite the contrary when you dig into the matchup versus the Cowboys.

The Beavers only shot 20% from deep against Oklahoma State (6/20) and racked up a measly seven assists. They dominated the glass (52-32) and held Cade Cunningham’s crew to 27.7% shooting.

The moral here is this is a gritty group that’s clearly playing their most inspired basketball of the season.

Loyola vs. Oregon State Betting Pick

Oregon State’s magical run comes to an end in the Sweet 16. That’s my Loyola Chicago vs. Oregon State prediction.

The Beavers beat a couple of solid teams to get here, but neither Tennessee nor Oklahoma State are anywhere near as ferocious on D as Loyola. The Ramblers feast on teams that are careless with the basketball; well, OSU turned it over 35 times against the Vols and Cowboys.

Things could get out of hand quickly on Saturday if the Beavers aren’t careful.

I expect Arkansas and Houston to both advance in their respective matchups. However, the Villanova vs. Baylor game is the other Saturday tilt that I’ll be keeping close tabs on.
