Louisiana Downs Picks – Wednesday, September 23, 2020

| September 23, 2020 12:16 am PDT

Somehow Louisiana Downs managed to feature just about every sort of horse race on its eight-race card for Wednesday. I’m not sure if that’s the reason I found so many underdogs and longshots to tip you to today, but I’ll take it.

I’m so happy about the surprises at Louisiana Downs I’m going right to my predictions and picks for Wednesday, September 23, 2020.

Picks for Louisiana Downs Race 2

This is an allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running a distance of seven furlongs for a purse of $20,500.

I’m going with the fourth-favored (8/1) entry here—Champagnerie, ridden by Carlos Lozada. This four-year-old filly moneyed seven of her 13 career starts and won four of them. Not only that, but most of her money finishes (and all four of her wins) have been in 2020—she moneyed six out of nine in her starts this year.

Ignore that 50/1 entry in the morning line—to put it in scientific terms, that ain’t gonna happen. But I do like the 12/1 Nancy’s Rescue, particularly when I saw that top jockey Diego Saenz was going to pilot. This three-year-old filly moneyed six of her 11 career starts, winning one of them. Show bet only.

  • Win: Champagnerie 8/1
  • Show: Nancy’s Rescue 12/1

Picks for Louisiana Downs Race 6

This is a maiden special weight race for filles and mares three years old and upward running a distance of one mile on turf for a purse of $19,500.

This 12-horse maiden race may be a squeaker, but I’m going with the second-favored (7/2) Grand Isle Girl, with Ashley Broussard in the irons. This three-year-old filly placed second in both of her career starts.

Longshots? We got longshots. First, though, let me tell you that the 50/1 entry never did better than 8th place. And the 30/1 and 20/1 entries aren’t much more impressive. No, we have to get down to 15/1 to find a possible value bet in this race—Smittys Eyecandy, with Odilon Martinez aboard. This five-year-old mare finished in the money only twice in her five career starts, but if you look at her performance in 2020, her money-finish record is two out of three. I see that as a sign of definite improvement, but if you don’t care to take the risk with me, I won’t cry.

  • Win: Grand Isle Girl 7/2
  • Show: Smittys Eyecandy 15/1

Picks for Louisiana Downs Race 7

This is an allowance race for Louisiana-bred three-year-olds and upward running a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $24,500.

The 3/1 morning line favorite in this race has won his most recent two races (also at Louisiana Downs), so that convinces me to put my money on him—Silver Galaxy, with Carlos Lozada in the irons. This three-year-old colt moneyed three of his four career starts, winning two of them.

And for my value show bet, I like the 30/1 longshot, Donna’s Court, ridden by Alexander Castillo. This five-year-old gelding moneyed 19 of his 38 career starts, winning three of them.

  • Win: Silver Galaxy 3/1
  • Show: Donna’s Court 30/1
