Louisiana Downs Picks – Monday, August 24, 2020
Louisiana Downs’ thoroughbred racing schedule continues apace on Monday, August 24, 2020 with a seven-race card of maiden, claiming, and allowance matches.
The forecast for Bossier City, Louisiana on Monday calls for a rarity of sorts: A day with zero chance of precipitation. You can expect mostly sunny skies, temperatures in the mid-90s, and winds around ten mph.
Post time for the first race at Louisiana Downs on Monday is 3:05 PM (CDT). With that out of the way, let’s get on to my picks and tips.
Picks for Louisiana Downs Race 2
This is an allowance optional claiming race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward running about five furlongs on turf for a purse of $21,000.
I am going with the third-favored (5/2) entry in this race: Emmport, ridden by Joel Dominguez. This five-year-old mare moneyed 14 of her 20 career starts, winning nine of them. Her most recent win was on August 9, 2020.
At 15/1, I think a show ticket is called-for on Light Up the Devil, with Gerardo Mora aboard. This five-year-old mare finished in the money for 12 of her 17 starts, three of them wins.
- Win: Emmport 5/2
- Show: Light Up the Devil 15/1
Pick for Louisiana Downs Race 5
This is a claiming race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward running 5-1/2 furlongs for a purse of $11,500.
This is one of those “least worst” races, and I’m agreeing with the morning line that the 5/2 favorite, Hanging Lake, with Jose A. Guerrero in the irons, fits the criteria. This four-year-old filly moneyed ten of her 19 career starts, winning one of them.
There’s only one long-odds entry in this race, and you should save your money.
- Win: Hanging Lake 5/2
Pick for Louisiana Downs Race 6
This is an allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward running about 7-1/2 furlongs on turf for a purse of $20,500.
With evenly-matched jockeys across the four morning line frontrunners, I see no reason not to back the second-favored (4/1) Shallow River, piloted by Carlos Lozada. This four-year-old filly moneyed ten of her 11 career starts, winning three of them.
I don’t see any longer-odds entries in this race that merit a show ticket, so let’s save our longshot money for something better, like lunch. Okay, I suppose if you must place a show bet, however picayune the return, then buy a show ticket on the 9/2 Kona Katie, with Gerardo Mora aboard. This five-year-old mare finished in the money nine of her 22 starts, winning five of them.
- Win: Shallow River 4/1
