Los Angeles FC vs. Real Salt Lake – MLS, September 12, 2021

| September 9, 2021 3:18 am PDT

Following ten games on Saturday, Los Angeles FC and Real Salt Lake wrap up the weekend’s MLS action at Banc of California Stadium on Sunday, September 12.

Just three points separate ninth-place LAFC and seventh-place RSL in the Western Conference, meaning both sides still stand a good chance of reaching the playoffs. Due to the congested nature of the standings, the result of Sunday’s clash could prove to be vitally important.

I share my prediction and pick for LAFC vs. Real Salt Lake at the end of this post, but first, here is all the key info for the match.

  • Date: Sunday, September 12, 2021
  • Time: 22:30 (ET)
  • Venue: Banc of California Stadium
  • LAFC: 9th (7-6-9)
  • RSL: 7th (8-6-8)

LAFC finally snapped an eight-game winless run by crushing Sporting KC 4-0 last weekend. It’s difficult to overstate the importance of that victory, especially when you consider what is expected of Bob Bradley’s side.

RSL, on the other hand, heads into the weekend on the back of a 3-2 win over FC Dallas. They have won three of their previous five matches and now sit level with sixth-place Portland on 30 points.

After analyzing the LAFC vs. Real Salt Lake odds, I give my prediction and betting pick for Sunday’s showdown.

Betting Odds for LAFC vs. RSL

Los Angeles FC to Win1.44
The Draw4.75
Real Salt Lake to Win6.00

I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t surprised by the bookmakers’ odds for this matchup. Of course, LAFC has the home-field advantage on Sunday. But let’s not forget that Bradley’s men have been nowhere near their best in recent weeks.

On the flip side, the mammoth price for the away win looks extremely tempting here. I mean, RSL currently sits three points clear of LAFC, so I can’t figure out why the visitors are priced at 6.00 to win this one.

LAFC Team News and Analysis

A Mamadou Fall double, along with goals from Cristian Arango and Eduard Atuesta, saw LAFC end their eight-match winless streak in style last time out. Despite seeing just 40% of the ball, the Black & Gold notched a hefty victory.

Having picked up three draws and five losses in the lead-up to last weekend’s win, Bradley’s men had slipped down the standings. But they now find themselves just three points outside the playoff spots.

Still, there is no hiding from the fact that LAFC is underperforming this season.

To make matters worse, Diego Rossi (2020 Golden Boot) recently left the club to join Turkish side Fenerbahce. With Carlos Vela (2019 MVP) back on the sidelines through injury, Bradley’s side is in a bit of a mess right now.

Assessing Real Salt Lake’s Recent Form

Real Salt Lake secured back-to-back wins over Austin and Houston before suffering two straight losses to Colorado and Vancouver. However, they bounced back last time out – coming from behind to beat Dallas 3-2.

It’s safe to say that RSL thoroughly deserved to beat the Toros, having racked up 25 shots while enjoying the lion’s share of possession.

Albert Rusnak netted the winning goal last weekend, taking his tally to six goals and three assists in 22 appearances this year. With Damir Kreilach (8 goals, 4 assists) and Rubio Rubin (5 goals, 5 assists) alongside Rusnak, RSL’s forward line is frightening.

Across the past five games, only three teams in the West have picked up more points than Pablo Mastroeni’s men. They will surely be confident of inflicting more pain on faltering LAFC.

LAFC vs. RSL Prediction and Pick

  • Real Salt Lake to Win

Purely for the potential profit, the away win is my LAFC vs. Real Salt Lake pick. The giant price for the RSL victory is just too generous to ignore here, especially when you consider the recent form of both sides.

Not only have Mastroeni’s men scored more goals than LAFC this year, but they have also conceded fewer. They have picked up more wins than Bradley’s side, too, so backing RSL at 6.00 is a no-brainer in my eyes.
