Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Washington Nationals – MLB, July 1st, 2021

| July 1, 2021 6:05 am PDT

The Washington Nationals look to continue their ascension in the NL East on Thursday. They have been on fire lately, going 8-2 over their last ten games, and are now within striking distance for first place in the division.

Patrick Corbin (5-6, 5.33 ERA) will hope to keep the Dodgers in check, and he’ll battle Tony Gonsolin (0-0, 2.77 ERA) on the other side.

L.A. enters as the more trustworthy team for MLB bettors, but it’s tough to gauge which way to lean here.

Let’s take a closer look and see which bet stands out in Thursday’s Dodgers vs. Nationals betting pick and prediction.

Dodgers vs. Nationals Odds for July 1st

Dodgers to Win-135
Nationals to Win+125
Over 9.5-105
Under 9.5-115

Normally the Dodgers would be an easy call here, as the best sites for betting on baseball make them really appealing with this -135 moneyline.

L.A. is still in a heated battle for first place in the AL West, and they’re a solid 6-4 over their last ten games. They’re also a respectable 21-18 on the road, and they’re just as ablaze as the Nats right now.

They’re also the better team in general, so they make complete sense as the favorites, even on the road.

You’re getting pretty good value with the moneyline, either way, but I certainly would lean toward the Dodgers.

The game total doesn’t stand out. It will always feel a bit low due to the Dodgers, but the pitching isn’t elite. Corbin can dazzle, and Gonsolin has been great with run prevention in limited duty, but neither of these guys are easy to trust.

Only one bet feels “obvious” at first glance, but this matchup may require a closer look to find the ideal bet for July 1st.

Dodgers vs. Nationals Game Preview

It’s pretty easy to look to the Dodgers and just move along, but a closer look makes them an even more appealing bet.

Tony Gonsolin has been rock solid in four appearances this year. He’s allowed just four runs in 13 innings, and he’s also making bats miss. Walks have been an issue, but if he’s not giving up runs, this game gets to L.A.’s bullpen, and it’s goodnight for the Nats.

Washington is not a big threat when it comes to bombs or walks, either, so there isn’t anything that necessarily points to them having an edge here.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, could take this one over early.

Patrick Corbin is the bigger name in this matchup, but he hasn’t been the same guy of years past. Hard contact has been his main issue, as he’s already allowed 15 homers on the year.

L.A. is starting to get healthy, and they specifically have an endless string of bats that can crush southpaws. The Dodgers aren’t the best in the league against lefties, but they hold their own.

Here’s how they rank in some key stats on the year against left-handers.

  • Hits – 181 (15th)
  • Runs – 104 (11th)
  • Home Runs – 31 (10th)
  • Walks – 105 (3rd)

I will admit that they are (gulp) dead last in batting average against lefties, and they also whiff a lot against lefties. The mashing and scoring is the scary part, though.

Oh, and Corbin just isn’t an elite guy right now. L.A. can always get shut down randomly – and they’re a preferred play when facing bad righties – but this is a better spot than some would care to admit.

Dodgers vs. Nationals Pick for July 1st

I absolutely see that the Dodgers aren’t a consistent team against left-handed pitchers. They’re also on the road against a surging Nats team.

However, Corbin hasn’t been himself this year. He’s giving up too much hard contact, and that can get you into trouble against a loaded Dodgers offense.

L.A. has been plenty fine on the road, both teams are hot, and both teams need to win. When things shape up as a wash, I consider price and who these teams are at their core. The Dodgers are the most talented team in baseball, and they have the better matchup in this spot.

I don’t mind the Under just because of L.A.’s inconsistencies against lefties, but I think they get it done here, and I am a fan of their price.
