Los Angeles Clippers vs. Phoenix Suns – NBA, April 28, 2021
The Suns host the Clippers tonight in what could be one of the games of the season and will no doubt have a massive impact on the Pacific Division. The race for the Pacific Division is a two-horse one between both of these teams, who have both won 43 matches this season.
Looking at the bigger picture, they are both one win behind the stuttering Jazz in the battle to top the Western Conference. This will impact both the Division and Conference placings, but you have to feel the victor will also gain confidence and momentum in the climax to the regular season.
The Clippers will be confident of dislodging the Suns from the top spot in the west as they have beaten them on four of the last five occasions they have met. The last of those meetings was only three weeks ago when the Clippers ran out comfortable ten-point winners. The main area that separated the two teams that night was in the three-point shooting department, where the Clippers made 23% more of their attempts.
LA also boasts one of the best records away to any other team in the league against the Suns, as they have won on eight of their previous nine visits to Phoenix. It is no surprise then to see that they have averaged nine more points than the Suns over their last ten meetings. The Clippers usually start well against the Suns, too, as they have averaged six more first-half points over tonight’s rivals.
Here is my Clippers vs. Suns betting preview.
Clippers vs. Suns Odds
Given the Clipper’s dominance of this fixture in recent years, I thought this would be a ‘pick em’ matchup. Therefore, at first glance, the value seems to be on LA. The points total also looks on the low side and could offer some value.
The Clippers boast an excellent record against teams in their Division has won eight and lost only two of their ten matches. They have also only ever once been considered underdogs against another team in their Division, and they went on to win that one
The Suns also have an excellent record of 6-1 as the betting favorites against teams in their Division.
The Clippers had a four-game win streak snapped by the Pelicans> last time out. It was an all-around poor performance, and they failed to win a single quarter of the matchup. This was only their second defeat in 13 games, and on both occasions, they coincidently scored 103-points in each loss. It also highlighted how reliant they are on Kawhi Leonard at times this season as he missed the game and remains side-lined tonight.
LA has an excellent record on the road, having won 19 and lost 12 of their 31 away fixtures this season. The defeat against the Pelicans was their second in four away trips, which perhaps highlights that they are slightly more fragile on the road.
Here are the latest betting trends for Los Angeles:
Against The Spread
- LA is 13-6-1 in their previous 20 matches.
- The Clippers have won four of their last five games against the Suns.
- They have only lost one of their previous six matches against teams in their Division.
- Six of their last seven games have gone under the betting total.
- Only one of their previous five matches on the road has failed to go under the points total.
- They have only lost two of their last 18 games against the Suns.
- The Clippers have won eight of their previous nine games against teams in the Western Conference.
The Clippers have an excellent offense driven by their superb three-point shooting, which is second to none this season. This was also the catalyst behind their recent win over the Suns, as they dominated this section of the game. They are also deadly from the free-throw line, so the Suns will need to remain disciplined throughout the night.
However, they haven’t attacked as well on the road this season as they are averaging two points fewer let game, which could make all the difference in what is expected to be a close matchup. It’s hard to know why this is as their three-point shooting has held up on the road this season, and their stats across the board generally match up.
The injuries are beginning to mount up for the Clippers right now. As well as Leonard, they will also miss Ibaka and Beverley. Batum and Coffey remain questionable to feature, but they hope to have George in the lineup tonight after he suffered an ankle I jury against the Pelicans.
The Suns recently lost back-to-back games for the first time since the end of January. However, regular service was resumed last time out against the Knicks as they beat New York 110-108. Although it looked like it could be three defeats in a row early on in that game as the Knicks led by seven at the end of the first quarter and halftime. But the Suns fired back in the second half and went on to win comfortably.
The Suns have been brilliant at home this season, having won 23 of their 32 matches in Phoenix. However, they did have a run of ten straight home wins ended by the Spurs in their previous home game.
Here are the latest betting trends for Phoenix:
Against The Spread
- They have only won one of their previous six matches against teams from the west coast.
- Phoenix is 5-11 in their last 16 games played at home on a Wednesday.
- Four of their previous five matches have gone over the betting total.
- The total has gone under in 12 of their last 16 games against teams in their Division.
- Phoenix is 14-4 in their previous 18 matches.
The Suns have an excellent offense that matches up well with the Clipper’s attack as they have both averaged 114-points per game this season. They, too, are a sharp-shooting team, but they tend to do their best work inside the arc. They are also ranked second from the free-throw line, narrowly behind tonight’s opponents.
Phoenix uses the ball effectively, and they tend to dictate the pace of the game most nights. This generally means they don’t make many turnovers either.
However, their offensive rebounding has been a concern this season and will need to improve drastically as we head towards the playoffs.
Their defense is also a close match as they have both conceded on average 108-points per game. These two stats highlight how tight things are between these teams as nothing is separating them.
The Suns have generally defended well against three-point specialists this season, so they will hope their last meeting with the Clippers was only a tiny bump in the road. They are holding their opponents to a field goal percentage of 46% this season, which is precisely what the Clippers are averaging in offense. Therefore, we can expect much the same tonight.
Chris Paul has been at the heart of everything the Suns have done well this season, and he has shown his heart is with the Suns as he turned down the opportunity to join the 76ers this season.
The Suns are hopeful that Galloway will feature tonight. However, Crowder and Saric are listed as questionable, and Nader is out for the season.
Clippers vs. Suns Prediction and Betting Pick
Over 222.5 Points-110
It’s a shame that Kahwi Leonard is missing tonight as we could be looking at a preview of the Western Conference finals tonight. It has always seemed the way this season that when two of the heavyweights clash, at least one of the teams are missing star players.
Regardless, it should be a great spectacle, and I believe both teams could push each other tonight. The Suns will be encouraged because Leonard is missing, and the Clippers will want to prove that they are much more than a one-person team. With both teams not making many books this season, it could make for a high-scoring affair.
Although it wasn’t when they met three weeks ago, that was down to the fact the Suns had an off night, and there was only one team troubling the scoreboard. They will want to make up for that tonight, so take over the points total in this exciting encounter.
