Los Angeles Angels vs. San Diego Padres – MLB, September 22, 2020

The Los Angeles Angels visit the San Diego Padres for a two-game interleague series at Petco Park, and the opening contest is set for Tuesday, September, 22, with the first pitch at 9:10 PM ET.

While the Padres had a day off on Monday, the Angels played the Rangers at home. Los Angeles was 23-31 and on the verge of elimination from the playoffs, while the 34-20 Padres sat at the second spot of the NL West, four games behind the Dodgers, and seven games ahead of the Giants at the third spot.

The Angels won’t bring the white flag, that’s for sure, so here’s my best Angels vs. Padres betting pick for Tuesday night, as we can choose from plenty of interesting markets.

The Padres are listed at -159 odds to win this clash, and I’m a bit surprised, expecting them around -180.

As I’ve said, the visitors are in dire straits, while the Padres are undoubtedly a better team than LA on both sides of the ball.

The Padres have been swinging a hot bat for most of the shortened 2020 season. They hit the fifth-most home runs in the majors (88) while scoring the third-most runs per contest (5.56). The Padres have the seventh-best batting average (.260) and third-best slugging percentage (.471).

On the other side, the Angels are scoring 4.93 runs per game (8^th in the MLB) on a .246 batting average (14^th) and .428 slugging percentage (13^th).

However, the Angels surrender the fourth-most runs per game (5.39), and their pitching staff has been awful thus far. LA’s bullpen owns the eighth-worst ERA in baseball (4.73).

Griffin Canning will get the starting nod for the Halos in the opener, and the righty is 1-3 with a 4.29 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 10 starts this season. He’s coming off his first win in 2020, tossing five innings in a one-run ball against Arizona.

Zach Davies will toe the slab for the Padres, and the right-hander is 7-3 with a 2.69 ERA and 1.01 WHIP on the season. He was charged with a loss last Tuesday, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work against the Dodgers, but Zach has been pretty consistent so far.

The Angels and Padres split a two-game set in Anaheim earlier this month. The Padres dismantled the Angels 11-4 in the opener, but they were shut down in the closer and suffered a 2-0 defeat. The Angels are 12-7 in their last 19 encounters with the Padres, and the over is 10-9 in that span.

The Padres still have a slim chance to win the NL West, but that’s not going to happen. They will almost certainly finish second and clinch the No. 4 seed in the National League, as well as the Angels will surely miss the postseason.

Hereof, the Padres can calculate and start preparing for the playoffs, but they should have enough firepower to outlast the Angels in this one.
