Lille vs. Celtic – Europa League, October 29, 2020
It’s not very often that Celtic goes three games without a victory, so Neil Lennon’s men will be desperate to stop their winless run when they visit Lille in the Europa League on Thursday, October 29.
The Scottish side lost 3-1 to AC Milan on Matchday 1, while a 4-1 victory for Lille over Sparta Prague has seen Les Dogues take early control of Group H.
I discuss the bookies’ odds before sharing my Lille vs. Celtic prediction and betting pick.
Lille vs. Celtic Odds
It is no secret that Celtic (4.90) is on a poor run at the moment, but I wasn’t expecting the odds gap for this matchup to be so big. The top sports betting sites view Lille (1.55) as the clear favorite to win on Thursday. However, I like the look of the high price for the draw (4.30).
I assess both sides’ chances below and decide whether betting against Lille is a good idea.
Lille vs. Celtic Preview
Following Ligue 1 victories over Nantes, Strasbourg, and Lens, Lille extended their winning streak to four games with a thumping 4-1 defeat of Sparta Prague last week. A Yusuf Yazici hat-trick, along with a goal from Nanitamo Ikone, saw LOSC claim a comfortable victory on Matchday 1.
Lille’s winning streak was brought to an end by Nice last weekend, with Burak Yilmaz rescuing a draw for his side. Still, Christophe Galtier’s men are yet to taste defeat this season, and they sit level with PSG at the summit of the French top flight following five wins and three draws.
LOSC has scored at a steady rate so far this term, but the team has been even more impressive at the other end of the pitch. Galtier’s backline has conceded just four goals in nine outings this season, with five clean sheets helping Lille to achieve the joint-best defensive record in Ligue 1.
It goes without saying that Celtic will need to be on top form to prevent Lille from claiming all three points on Thursday.
Sadly, the Hoops are enduring a rough patch at the moment.
Celtic has only lost one of their 11 league games this term, so there is no need to panic just yet. But after losing to Old Firm rivals Rangers and drawing with Aberdeen last time out, Lennon’s men find themselves six points off the pace in the Scottish Premiership.
Despite creating plenty of chances against Milan, Celtic suffered a 3-1 defeat on Matchday 1. The Bhoys registered 13 shots against the Serie A giant last week, but it felt like they carried their domestic struggles onto the European stage.
Lennon will be eager for his players to put their run of disappointing results behind them and get back on track with a solid performance this week.
Lille vs. Celtic Pick
Lille is bookies’ favorite for a reason, but I would like the price for the home win to be higher here. If I was going to back the French side to secure the victory, the odds would have to be closer to 2.00.
With that in mind, I believe the draw offers excellent value. Lennon’s men are no pushovers, and I can see them doing enough to steal a point.
