Prediction for Lightning vs. Rangers Game 1 – June 1st (2022)

| May 31, 2022 7:36 am PDT

The New York Rangers scored a crucial Game 7 road victory over the Carolina Hurricanes to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. They’ll face a familiar foe in the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tampa Bay looks to become the first team since the Edmonton Oilers in the early 1980s to make three consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances. This will be their sixth Conference Finals appearance in eight years.

New York lost to Tampa Bay in the 2015 Eastern Conference Finals. A Game 1 victory would jumpstart their redemption. Here are the odds for Game 1.

The New York Rangers will host Game 1, but the top NHL betting sites give the Tampa Bay Lightning the edge. Tampa Bay hasn’t played since May 23, so they’re much fresher for the Eastern Conference Finals.

Since facing a 3-2 series deficit against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay has covered in five of their last six games. They didn’t have an issue with the Florida Panthers, covering in every game. The Rangers covered in five of their previous seven games.

The goal total for Game 1 opens at 5.5. BetUS is the only site not giving an advantage to the over. They combined to go over in two of their 11 Conference Semifinal games.

Brayden Point hasn’t played since Game 7 of the first round. Point could return in the playoffs, but he won’t play in Game 1. Can the Lightning continue to succeed without him?

Lightning vs. Rangers Breakdown

The Tampa Bay Lightning are the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champions, but they didn’t exhibit the same dominance in the regular season. They showed resilience against the Toronto Maple Leafs, then swept the Presidents’ Trophy Winner.

The New York Rangers have been the comeback kids in the playoffs. They faced a 3-1 deficit in the first round before winning three straight games over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Then, they became the first team to beat the Carolina Hurricanes on the road in the playoffs.

When I look at this matchup, I immediately gravitate towards the goalies. Check out the numbers for Andrei Vasilevskiy and Igor Shesterkin.

Andrei Vasilevskiy (Lightning) Igor Shesterkin (Rangers)
GA/G 2.23 2.68
Save Percentage .932 .928

Shesterkin posted MVP-caliber numbers in the regular season. He struggled in the first round of the playoffs, but he bounced back against the Hurricanes. Which version will show up against Tampa Bay?

Vasilevskiy held the best offense in the NHL to three goals in four games. His presence is a big reason the Lightning have won back-to-back Stanley Cups.

The Western Conference Finals have the star power, but we can’t forget about the top offensive players for the Lightning and Rangers.

Mika Zabanejad and Adam Fox failed to record a point in the first two games of the Conference Semifinals. Check out their numbers in the last five games.

  • Mika Zabanejad: 4 goals and 4 assists
  • Adam Fox: 2 goals and 6 assists

Both players will need to play at a high level if New York wants to score a Game 1 victory. They can’t fall behind a team like the Lightning. Vasilevskiy isn’t the goaltender to face in a comeback attempt.

Nikita Kucherov was a sleeper in my latest 2022 Stanley Cup MVP odds. He looked great with seven points in the Conference Semifinals.

Lightning vs. Rangers Same Game Parlay

  • Adam Fox Over 0.5 Points (-138)
  • Ross Colton Over 0.5 Points (+130)
  • Corey Perry to Score a Goal (+300)

There is plenty of value behind my same game parlay for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. A $100 bet will give you a profit well over $1,000.

I highlighted Adam Fox in my game breakdown, so why not include him in my same game parlay? Fox struggled in Games 1 and 2 in the Conference Semifinals. However, he bounced back with eight points in five games.

Fox had at least one point in every game of the Rangers’ first-round series. That includes a four-point performance in Game 6. Fox seems like a strong bet to record a point in Game 1 against the Lightning.

Tampa Bay has many stars on its offense, but most people wouldn’t consider Ross Colton one of them. Colton had 39 points in the regular season, but he has looked great in the playoffs.

  • 5 goals
  • 3 assists
  • 8 points

Colton had 0.49 points per game in the regular season. He has raised that to 0.73 in the playoffs. Colton has recorded a point in nine of his last 11 games. The value is way too good to pass up.

Corey Perry has looked good in his 17th season. The 37-year-old played the full 82-game schedule for the first time since the 2016-17 season. Perry didn’t play a significant role in the first round, but he looked great against the Florida Panthers.

Perry kicked off the series with a goal in the first three games. Florida kept him off the board in Game 4, but that shouldn’t stop you. There is value in him scoring a goal in Game 1.

Lightning vs. Rangers Pick

Pick
  • Lightning to Win
    -123

The New York Rangers swept the season series over the Tampa Bay Lightning, but they’ll have a tough time scoring a victory in Game 1.

This Lightning team isn’t the same as the regular season. They’re playing at a level comparable to their Stanley Cup Championships. That should scare the Rangers. The extra rest will be crucial as they kick off the Eastern Conference Finals with a victory.
