Leicester City vs. Southampton – FA Cup, April 18, 2021

| April 17, 2021 6:44 am PDT

Leicester and Southampton face off at Wembley on Sunday, April 18, with a place in the FA Cup final up for grabs.

The Foxes are currently chasing Champions League qualification in the EPL and sit third in the table. On the flip side, a wretched run has seen the Saints slip to fourteenth – 20 points behind Leicester and ten points above the relegation zone.

You can find my Leicester City vs. Southampton prediction below, along with the betting odds for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final.

Leicester City to Win1.83

Southampton to Win4.05

Given the 20-point gulf between these two sides in the Premier League standings, it is hardly surprising that 10bet views Leicester as the clear favorite to win this one.

The Foxes beat Southampton 2-0 back in January, although the Saints have always managed to put their EPL struggles behind them when competing in the FA Cup this season.

Let’s take a closer look at the teams.

Leicester vs. Southampton FA Cup Semi-Final Preview

Leicester City’s route to the FA Cup semi-finals:

  • Stoke City (4-0)
  • Brentford (3-1)
  • Brighton & Hove Albion (1-0)
  • Manchester United (3-1)

Leicester sealed a hugely impressive 3-1 victory over Man Utd in the previous round, thanks largely to a Kelechi Iheanacho brace. The Nigerian forward is in blistering form right now, having netted 11 goals in his last ten appearances.

Despite Iheanacho’s recent hot streak, the Foxes’ EPL results have taken a turn for the worse of late. They have only managed to win two of their previous six league games and head into Sunday’s semi-final on the back of two straight defeats.

It looked as though Champions League qualification was all but secured not so long ago. But with a two-point gap between them and fifth-place Chelsea, Brendan Rodgers’ men are in real danger of dropping out of the top four.

Still, the Foxes can take confidence from their previous meeting with Southampton. They racked up 16 shots against the Saints back in January, with goals from James Maddison and Harvey Barnes sealing the win.

Barnes is currently injured, although Maddison is set to return to Rodgers’ starting XI after missing Sunday’s 3-2 loss to West Ham.

Southampton’s route to the FA Cup semi-finals:

  • Shrewsbury Town (2-0)
  • Arsenal (1-0)
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers (2-0)
  • Bournemouth (3-0)

Remarkably, Southampton has yet to concede a single goal in the FA Cup this season. Why is that remarkable? Well, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men have the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League – second only to lowly West Brom.

Funnily enough, the Saints suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of West Brom last weekend, despite seeing 61% possession and registering 14 shots.

Hasenhuttl’s men have only managed to win three of their last 19 EPL outings, sustaining a whopping 11 losses in their previous 14.

In the FA Cup, Southampton has been almost unrecognizable from the team that is struggling in the Premier League. Not only have the Saints kept four straight clean sheets, but they have also scored eight goals along the way.

Having said that, it will be extremely difficult for them to maintain that kind of form at the business end of the competition.

Leicester vs. Southampton Prediction and Pick

  • Leicester City to Win

The Saints have given a good account of themselves in the FA Cup this season, but I can’t see them reaching the final. After suffering a dismal defeat to West Brom last time out, confidence will be at an all-time low in the Southampton camp.

Rodgers’ men also sustained a disappointing loss last weekend, although they are far more likely to bounce back on Sunday. I’m backing the Foxes to beat Southampton and reach their first FA Cup final since 1969.
