LAFC vs. Portland Timbers – MLS, November 8, 2020
LAFC and Portland have already produced a number of thrilling encounters this year. The two sides drew 2-2 at the MLS is Back Tournament before LAFC thrashed the Timbers 4-2 in September.
Following a 1-1 draw last month, LAFC welcomes Portland to Banc of California Stadium on Sunday, November 8, as the regular season draws to a close.
Of course, both teams have already secured a playoff spot. But this will still be a tasty battle. You can find my LAFC vs. Portland Timbers prediction and betting pick below.
LAFC vs. Portland Timbers Odds
10bet clearly thinks that LAFC (1.62) has the upper hand here, but I’m not sure why the odds gap for this matchup is so big.
Not only does Portland (4.35) have a seven-point lead over the Black & Gold, the Timbers have also been far more consistent throughout the campaign.
LAFC vs. Portland Timbers Preview
To say that LAFC has been unpredictable this season would probably be a bit of an understatement. I mean, you only have to look at their record (W9-D4-L8) to see just how inconsistent the team has been.
Bob Bradley’s men finally secured their playoff place with a nervy 2-1 victory over Houston last week. The win against the Dynamo extended LAFC’s unbeaten streak to three games, but San Jose ended their promising run on Wednesday, securing a 3-2 victory.
With MVP Carlos Vela sidelined for the majority of the season, Diego Rossi has seriously upped his game. The Uruguayan has racked up an astonishing 17 goals and four assists in 22 games in all competitions this year.
However, the Black & Gold’s defense has let the team down far too often. Bradley’s men are the highest scorers in the Western Conference (46), yet they also have the fourth-worst defensive record in the division (38).
LAFC must tighten things up at the back if they want to be viewed as genuine MLS Cup contenders.
Having won the MLS is Back Tournament, Portland has already added some silverware to their trophy cabinet this year. But I’m sure the Timbers will be desperate to get their hands on the biggest prize of all.
Giovanni Savarese’s side has been one of the standout teams in the country this season, and there is still a chance that Portland could snatch first place in the Western Conference if things go their way on the final day.
The Timbers put together a phenomenal run of one defeat in 11 games between mid-September and early November, but they were brought back down to earth by Colorado on Wednesday. Uncharacteristically, Portland failed to register a single shot on target last time out, with the Rapids winning 1-0.
Savarese’s men are yet to beat LAFC this year, although they have only suffered one defeat in this fixture. Following a couple of draws, the Timbers will be eager to get the better of Bradley’s boys.
LAFC vs. Portland Timbers Pick
Portland Timbers to Win4.35
Given that LAFC has been wildly inconsistent this year, I think odds of 1.62 for the home win are far too low. The Black & Gold could win this game, but the price just doesn’t seem right.
In my opinion, backing Portland offers the best value. The Timbers have been immense this season, so odds of 4.35 for the away win are definitely worth taking advantage of.
