LA Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes – MLS, May 29, 2021
Okay, it may not be El Trafico. But the California Clasico between the LA Galaxy and San Jose is always a fiery encounter.
Having won four of their opening six matches, the Galaxy sits third in the Western Conference. However, last weekend’s 3-0 thrashing at the hands of the Timbers was a big wake-up call for Greg Vanney and his players.
The Earthquakes also conceded three goals last time out, losing 3-1 to Sporting KC. They find themselves in seventh place – three points behind the Galaxy – following back-to-back defeats.
Below, I discuss the odds for Saturday’s showdown before sharing my LA Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes prediction and betting pick.
LA Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes Odds
With three straight home wins in the books this season, the Galaxy (2.00) is the bookmakers’ favorite to claim the California bragging rights on Saturday.
A run of three consecutive victories saw the Quakes (3.50) fly up the standings a few weeks ago. But after suffering two successive losses, Matias Almeyda’s side is the rightful underdog here.
Previewing the California Clasico
Let’s get one thing straight – the Galaxy is definitely heading in the right direction under Vanney. It feels like the former Toronto coach has already changed the mentality at the club, while the performances on the pitch have improved.
However, the Galaxy is still a long way behind the top teams in the West.
Following back-to-back 3-2 victories over Inter Miami and RBNY, Vanney’s men were crushed 3-0 by Seattle. Solid wins over LAFC and Austin came soon after, yet the Galaxy suffered another damaging defeat last weekend.
When Derrick Williams was sent off just before half-time, it was always going to be difficult for the Galaxy to compete with Portland. As it turned out, the Timbers netted three second-half goals and totally humiliated Vanney’s side.
On a brighter note, the Galaxy has scored ten goals across their four wins this term, with Chicharito contributing seven goals and an assist.
It felt as though San Jose’s opening weekend loss to Houston stunned the team into action. After that, the Earthquakes went on a three-game winning streak – seeing off Dallas (3-1), DC United (4-1), and Real Salt Lake (2-1) in the process.
Chris Wondolowksi and Jackson Yueill both scored a couple of goals along the way, while 17-year-old Cade Cowell bagged two goals and three assists in the space of two matches. But since then, the Quakes have gone quiet.
In fairness, Almeyda’s men gave a decent account of themselves against Seattle a fortnight ago. They enjoyed 60% possession and racked up 15 shots, yet the Sounders claimed a narrow 1-0 win.
Once again, the Quakes dominated possession and created plenty of goalscoring opportunities last weekend. However, they were ultimately outclassed by SKC – losing 3-1 on home soil.
Having lost each of their last two outings, it goes without saying the Almeyda’s men will be low on confidence at the moment.
My Galaxy vs. San Jose Prediction and Pick
LA Galaxy to Win2.00
Given that you can double your money, I’m backing the Galaxy to win this one. Vanney’s men have been unstoppable on home soil this year, securing three straight wins while scoring seven goals along the way.
I expect the Quakes to rise to the occasion, but I’m confident that Chicharito and co. will get the job done on Saturday.
