LA Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes – MLS, August 20, 2021

| August 18, 2021 11:06 am PDT

The third California Clásico of the season goes down at Dignity Health Sports Park this Friday, August 20, as LA Galaxy locks horns with rivals San Jose Earthquakes once again.

Greg Vanney’s men have already beaten the Earthquakes twice this year – picking up a 1-0 home win back in May before securing a 3-1 victory in San Jose a month later.

Can the Galaxy make three in a row?

In this betting preview, I analyze the teams, discuss the MLS odds for Friday’s clash, and finish up by sharing my LA Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes prediction and pick.

Let’s get right into it!

Will the Galaxy’s Clásico Dominance Continue?

Despite suffering their seventh defeat of the season on Tuesday, the Galaxy remains in a seriously strong position. They may have been unable to prevent a 2-1 loss to Colorado in midweek, but that shouldn’t affect their bid for Western Conference glory.

Indeed, Vanney’s men currently sit third in the standings – one point shy of second-place Seattle and two points behind first-place Sporting KC.

Only four teams in the West have lost more games than Vanney’s side this year. But when it comes to wins, no club has picked up more. A conference-low two draws have kept the Galaxy battling at the top end of the table throughout the campaign.

They can count themselves pretty unfortunate to have lost on Tuesday, too. Despite enjoying 65% possession and chalking up 20 shots, Rayan Raveloson’s goal wasn’t enough to cancel out strikes from Jonathan Lewis and Andre Shinyashiki.

When MVP contender Chicharito returns from injury, the Galaxy shouldn’t struggle to outscore opponents again.

Can the Earthquakes Upset the MLS Odds?

The Earthquakes, meanwhile, put in a hugely spirited display to snatch a point from Minnesota on Tuesday. Nathan Cardoso was sent off after just 21 minutes, but his teammates managed to hold and claim a 1-1 draw.

A Bakaye Dibassy own goal put San Jose ahead inside 12 minutes before Will Trapp equalized on 22. Although they ended the game with just 34% to their name, Matias Almeyda’s men came away with a precious point.

The Quakes’ unbeaten streak now stands at nine games, yet they still find themselves 12 points behind the Galaxy. The reason? Well, they have now drawn seven of their previous nine outings – scraping just two wins along the way.

Of course, avoiding defeat is great. But if Almeyda’s men are serious about securing a playoff berth, they must start turning draws into wins.

Unfortunately, I can’t see them returning to winning ways on Friday. The Galaxy has dominated San Jose so far this season – and that isn’t likely to change anytime soon.

LA Galaxy vs. San Jose Earthquakes Odds

LA Galaxy to Win1.86
The Draw3.65
San Jose Earthquakes to Win3.80

Don’t get me wrong, the juicy price for the draw looks very appealing here. I mean, the Earthquakes have drawn seven of their past nine matches – so they will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds in Carson.

That said, Vanney’s men have only drawn two of their 20 MLS encounters this year. They have been very much “all or nothing” in 2021 – and I can see them claiming all three points on Friday.

My Betting Pick for Galaxy vs. Earthquakes

  • LA Galaxy to Win

Less than two months ago, the Galaxy sealed an easy 3-1 victory over San Jose at PayPal Park. Back on home soil this time around, I’m confident that Vanney’s side will secure a third straight California Clásico win.

The Quakes have managed to win just two of their previous six meetings with the Galaxy, registering two draws and two losses in the process. I think they will add another loss to that tally on Friday.
