LA Galaxy vs. Portland Timbers – MLS, July 30, 2021
What has happened to the LA Galaxy?
The Greg Vanney era may have started with a run of seven wins in ten games, but the honeymoon period is well and truly over.
The five-time MLS Cup champions have only managed to win one of their last five matches and head into Friday’s meeting with Portland on the back of an embarrassing 4-0 thrashing to FC Dallas.
Still, the Timbers remain six points behind the Galaxy in the Western Conference. Just like Vanney’s side, they have lost three of their previous five games.
Here is all the key match info.

Planning to bet on Friday’s showdown? I’ve got you covered.
In this betting preview, I analyze the teams, look at the MLS odds, and wrap things up by sharing my prediction and pick for LA Galaxy vs. Portland Timbers.
Let’s get right into it!
LA Galaxy Team News and Analysis
There was a point earlier in the season when the Galaxy was looking like a genuine Supporters’ Shield contender. Unfortunately, a series of below-par results has changed that.
After losing to Sporting KC and Vancouver in the space of three matches, Vanney’s side was held to a 2-2 draw by Real Salt Lake. Regardless of the team’s iffy spell, nobody could have predicted what happened last weekend.
The Galaxy was crushed 4-0 by Dallas at Toyota Stadium, despite chalking up 16 shots.
Remarkably, Vanney’s men now have the worst defensive record in the West. They may be the fourth-highest scorers, but they can’t expect to challenge for silverware with a leaky backline.
Assessing Portland’s Recent Form
It’s probably fair to say that Portland has been one of the most unpredictable sides in Major League Soccer this year, with a record of 6-1-7 underlining the team’s inconsistency.
Felipe Mora gave Portland the lead inside ten minutes last weekend, but the Oregon outfit failed to hold onto their advantage. Late strikes from Chase Gasper and Robin Lod saw Minnesota come from behind to claim all three points at Allianz Field.
If the Timbers want to start climbing the standings, they will need to score more goals. Only five teams in the West have found the back of the net on fewer occasions than Portland this year.
Galaxy vs. Portland – Odds, Prediction, and Pick
I think we can discount the draw right off the bat here. The two sides have played a combined total of 29 games in Major League Soccer this season, yet they have only registered one draw apiece.
10bet views the Galaxy (2.10) as the favorite to win this one, leaving Portland (3.20) as the underdog. But with both teams struggling for consistency at the moment, this clash could easily go either way.
Purely for the potential profit, I’m backing the Timbers to come away from Los Angeles with all three points. Savarese’s men boast a far better defensive record than Vanney’s side, and that could make all the difference on Friday.
