LA Galaxy vs. Colorado Rapids – MLS, August 17, 2021
The LA Galaxy welcomes Colorado to Dignity Health Sports Park on Tuesday, August 17, with both sides battling towards the top end of the Western Conference.
Greg Vanney’s men currently sit third in the standings – one point behind second-place Seattle and two points shy of first-place Sporting KC.
Meanwhile, the Rapids find themselves four points behind the Galaxy, although they have two games in hand over the three teams above them.
Before we get stuck into my betting preview for Tuesday’s match, here are the LA Galaxy vs. Colorado Rapids odds.
The top-rated soccer betting apps view the Galaxy (2.25) as the favorite to win this one. Yet, as you can see, the price for the home victory is noticeably high.
Despite being handed the underdog tag, Colorado (3.05) will be confident of narrowing the gap between them and the Galaxy on Tuesday. I mean, they have only lost one of their previous eight outings.
Let’s take a closer look at the teams before settling on a prediction and pick for LA Galaxy vs. Colorado Rapids.
LA Galaxy vs. Colorado Rapids Preview
The Galaxy extended their unbeaten streak to four games with a hard-fought victory over Minnesota on Saturday. The visitors faced a barrage of 21 shots at Allianz Field, but Kevin Cabral managed to convert their only shot on target.
Following wins over Portland and Real Salt Lake, along with a draw against Vancouver, Vanney’s men remain in contention to win the Western Conference this year.
That said, if they want to overtake Seattle and Sporting KC, they must start conceding fewer goals. Only one team in the West – Portland – has a poorer defensive record than the Galaxy.
On the flip side, Vanney’s men are the third-highest scorers in the conference. Even without injured star Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez – who I included in my recent MVP power rankings – the team is still capable of outscoring any opponent.
As the video above shows, Colorado cruised past Houston without any issues on Sunday. Goals from Lalas Abubakar, Michael Barrios, and Braian Galvan handed the Rapids an easy victory over the Dynamo.
Having lost just one of their last eight matches, Robin Fraser’s men now sit just six points behind first-place SKC. If they win both their games in hand, they could find themselves sitting pretty atop the West.
While the Galaxy has conceded a whopping 28 goals this year (1.47 goals per game), Colorado has only conceded 17 (1 goal per game). As a result, the Rapids boast the second-best defensive record in the division.
With Michael Barrios (5 goals, 3 assists), Diego Rubio (3 goals, 3 assists), and Cole Bassett (3 goals, 2 assists) delivering the goods at the other end of the field, Fraser’s side is strong in every department.
Score Prediction for Galaxy vs. Rapids
Having assessed both sides, I can see this matchup producing plenty of goals. Both teams know where the back of the net is – and the Galaxy’s backline has struggled all season long.
With so much at stake, neither side will want to lose this game. For that reason, I can see them settling for a draw on Tuesday. The 2-2 draw is my score prediction for LA Galaxy vs. Colorado Rapids.
My LA Galaxy vs. Colorado Rapids Pick
Over 3.5 Goals2.75
Although I expect a tie at Dignity Health Sports Park, the draw is always a risky bet. In my opinion, the over 3.5 goals market offers far better value here.
13 of the Galaxy’s 19 games have produced three or more goals this year, with seven of those dishing up over 3.5 goals. With high-scoring Colorado up next for the Galaxy, the goals should continue to flow on Tuesday.
