The French Open has been a disaster throughout Kristyna Pliskova’s career so far and she was eliminated in the opening round on her first five attempts. The Czech player finally broke the curse with a win in 2020 and it was a dominant performance versus Viktoria Kuzmova.

Pliskova’s serve was working well, while her opponent was abysmal, so I wouldn’t reach too much into that match. Muguruza is an entirely different animal and should be able to put the Czech athlete under constant pressure.

I don’t have high expectations for Pliskova because clay is simply not her surface. She has a negative balance on red courts throughout her career and I expect her to add another loss to that on Wednesday.

Muguruza’s complex style helps her find various ways to win points and she’s a force to be reckoned with at the Roland-Garros.

Her start this year has been far from flawless and the Spaniard had to go through three sets against Tamara Zidansek. And yet, we’ve seen her struggle early on before, only to come back stronger.

I believe that Muguruza will improve in the second round and after her impressive performance in the Italian Open, I expect a deep run in the 2020 French Open.

I believe that the betting sites have got this one wrong and Muguruza should be able to win with ease. The Spaniard is much better on clay than Pliskova, so getting -126 for the favorite to cover the -4.5 handicap is more than enough for me.
