KBO Predictions and Analysis – Saturday, October 30

| October 29, 2021 8:03 am PDT

The final day of the KBO regular season is on Saturday and it’s been a wild ride. After 143 games, we still have no clue how the final standings would look like which is a testimony to how competitive the elite South Korean baseball league has been.

Five teams still have a lot to play for, so four of the five games on Saturday matter! That’s a great way to finish the campaign and I share my KBO predictions for all of the following fixtures.

  • KT Wiz Suwon vs. SSG Landers
  • LG Twins vs. Lotte Giants
  • Doosan Bears vs. Hanwha Eagles
  • Samsung Lions vs. NC Dinos
  • Kiwoom Heroes vs. Kia Tigers

KT Wiz Suwon to Beat SSG Landers

Both sides need a win on Saturday, but for very different reasons. KT Wiz Suwon is currently leading the standings and a victory would be enough for the top seed in the playoffs.

In the meantime, the Landers are desperately trying to qualify for the postseason.  They are currently fifth, so a win would secure their spot. If they lose, they need the Heroes to do the same, but that’s highly unlikely.

I would normally back the Landers in such a desperate situation because the team showed a strong fighting spirit numerous times this season. The problem is that SSG’s record against KT Wiz is abysmal. The leaders have won 11 of 15 meetings and the Landers have only 2 victories.

The projected starting pitchers suggest that KT Wiz should have the upper hand too. Let’s check them out.

  • So Hyeong-jun (KT Wiz): 6-7; 4.18 ERA
  • Kim Keon-woo (Landers): 0-1; 3.27 ERA

Both sides are sending talented youngsters, but the experience gap is obvious. So Hyeong-jun started a bunch of games this season and he played for 5+ innings in most of them. The guy won both of his encounters against the Landers, so I think we can expect a good performance.

SSG’s Kim Keon-woo has been solid in his starts, but he rarely lasts more than 3-4 innings. I like the youngster and his team’s fighting spirit, but this is the worst opponent to face in such a key game.

I sincerely hope to see the Landers in the playoffs, but the sensible choice would be to back KT Wiz in my KBO predictions for October 30.

LG Twins to Beat Lotte Giants

The LG Twins have the least defeats in the KBO, but they tied way too many games and find themselves third in the standings. The good news is that they can finish above the first two teams with some luck.

There are two conditions for that to happen and the first one is to win against the Giants.

Lotte’s players look demotivated ever since losing their chances to qualify for the postseason, so I don’t expect too much resistance.

The Twins also have the better starting pitcher and they have dominated this particular opponent in 2021. I have little doubt that the favorites will get the job done and hope KT Wiz and/or Samsung Lions are defeated.

Doosan Bears to Beat Hanwha Eagles

That’s the only game that won’t affect the final standings. The Bears cemented the fourth spot in the table with a victory in the previous round, so both sides can’t move up or down.

They will play for the fans and it could be an interesting clash. Anything can happen when the stakes are low, but the projected starting pitchers suggest that the Bears should have the upper hand. Let’s take a look.

  • Choi Won-joon (Bears): 12-4; 3.26 ERA
  • Jang Min-je (Eagles): 0-1; 3.08 ERA

Choi won-joon is a very reliable option and the Bears have been much stronger this season as a whole. I would still urge you to be careful because the game doesn’t really matter, but backing Doosan is the better decision.

Samsung Lions to Beat NC Dinos

The NC Dinos decided to show up after they were eliminated from the KBO playoffs and won against the Lions on Thursday. It was a blow for Samsung’s ambition and another win for the dethroned champions could send the Lions third in the standings.

They obviously don’t want to take any risks and they’re sending the heavy artillery. Let’s take a look at the starting pitchers, so you understand what I mean.

  • David Buchanan (Lions): 16-5; 2.96 ERA
  • Wes Parsons (Landers): 4-7; 3.59 ERA

You would struggle to find a more consistent pitcher in the KBO than David Buchanan. The American has been great this season and he crushed the Dinos once already.

I expect more of the same and the H2H record of 10-5 in favor of the Lions gives me even more confidence that they will win on Saturday.

Kiwoom Heroes to Beat Kia Tigers

It’s always hard to predict games that involve the Kiwoom Heroes. They have been very inconsistent this year which is why the team is sixth in the standings, hoping for the SSG Landers to lose.

And yet, this is one of the fixtures that should be relatively easy for the Heroes. They face one of the worst leagues in the country.

The Tigers are ninth in the table and they have no chance of moving up, so I don’t expect wonders from them on Saturday.

On top of that, the Heroes are expected to start Eric Jokisch who has a 3-0 record against this team and a 2.98 ERA overall this season. The American should be able to lead his side to another victory with ease.
