KBO Predictions and Analysis – Friday, August 20 (2021)
Friday will bring us another day of action in South Korean baseball, and the weather shouldn’t be a problem this time around. The forecasts are positive, so all five games should proceed as expected.
The starting pitchers have been announced too, so it’s time for my KBO predictions for August 20. Here’s a list of the fixtures I cover in my post.
- Hanwha Eales vs. Doosan Bears
- KT Wiz Suwon vs. Lotte Giants
- SSG Landers vs. Samsung Lions
- Kiwoom Heroes vs. Kia Tigers
- LG Twins vs. NC Dinos
Doosan Bears to Beat Hanwha Eagles
I have little doubt about this one based on the team news. Ariel Miranda is about to start for the Doosan Bears, and he’s been the side’s best pitcher so far with eight wins. Two of them were against the same opponent, and it’s obvious that the Cuban knows how to beat the Eagles.
At the same time, Hanwha’s starter has eight defeats so far in the league and is yet to taste victory in the KBO. I don’t expect much from him, and the Bears have all the means to punish him.
The bullpen of the Eagles is shaky, too, and Doosan should have a relatively easy game on Friday.
Lotte Giants to Beat KT Wiz Suwon
Lotte’s form has been amazing since KBO’s return after the Olympic break. The Giants look much stronger, and their confidence is off the charts.
At the same time, KT Wiz had some weak games in the past couple of weeks.
The H2H record for 2021 shows four wins for each side, and the Giants are sending Dan Straily, one of their best pitchers. He has been somewhat shaky this season, but the American is still a reliable player.
I think he can help the Giants in this one, and KT Wiz will be forced to send a guy with only one game in 2021. That’s enough for me to back Lotte in my KBO predictions for August 20.
Samsung Lions to Beat SSG Landers
The SSG Landers are tricky, and they can beat anyone on a good day. And yet, the team has been on the losing end in most games recently.
I’m not sure we can expect a different outcome against the Lions because Won Tae-in is next in the rotation. He has led Samsung to ten victories so far, and his stats are amazing.
The pitcher shouldn’t allow many runs, and the Lions have the offensive arsenal to hit on the other end.
Lee Tang-yang is the guy who’s supposed to stop them, but I have my doubts. He was destroyed by the same opponent last time around, so another victory for the Lions makes the most sense.
Kiwoom Heroes to Beat Kia Tigers
The Kiwoom Heroes put themselves in an excellent position last week, only to lose twice against the last-placed Hanwha Eagles in this one.
Jeong Chan-heon is starting for the Heroes, and he has been great this season, winning seven games already and losing only twice.
The Tigers will use a decent pitcher too, but their bullpen and offense are weaker. The Heroes should win this one, although they can always surprise us.
NC Dinos to Beat LG Twins
I have a very simple strategy for all games involving LF. If the Twins have a significantly better starting pitcher than the opposition, I back them.
This won’t be the case on Friday. Son Ju-young is expected to start, and he was badly punished in both of his games in 2021.
The Dinos certainly can expose his flaws, and they also have a decent starter to work with. Wes Parsons has a 3.80 ERA after eight games, and he can stop the Twins.
You never know with the Dinos this season, but the reigning champions certainly have the upper hand for this clash.
