Kansas Jayhawks vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers – College Football (September 10, 2021)
It is crazy how much difference one year can make. The Jayhawks have been one of the worst programs in the country among all teams in the Power Five conference.
Yet, they were favored in their season opener as six-point favorites over Coastal Carolina last season.
Many wondered if the Chanticleers were for real and were unsure if they would make a bowl game out of the respectable Sun Belt conference. Coastal Carolina would then go 11-1 and finish their season in the AP Top 25. It was a surreal season for Jamey Chadwell and his squad.
Now, the Jayhawks enter the season as underdogs in every game from Week 2 and on.
Enough discussing the past, it is now time to analyze Kansas and Coastal Carolina as they start Week 2 on Friday night. Here is my Kansas vs. Coastal Carolina prediction and top betting pick.
Kansas vs. Coastal Carolina Odds
BetOnline has Coastal Carolina coming into this one as a huge 25-point home favorite.
Kansas has lost their last 30 games dating back to 2002, in which they are a 25-plus point underdog on the road. They are sadly 10-20 against the spread in those games. They even allowed 35 or more points in all but four of those games.
Coastal Carolina has only been a 25-plus point favorite in three home games over the last three seasons. They are 3-0 straight up with a 2-1 record against the spread, failing to cover against Campbell as a four-touchdown favorite (2020).
It is time to discuss this Friday night primetime matchup between Kansas and Coastal Carolina.
Why Kansas Wins
The Jayhawks could win this one at the line of scrimmage. They hung in there with a respectable FCS opponent, South Dakota.
They could have done better in the trenches after being outrushed 165-82.
The Jayhawks defense did a great job of getting off the field on third down. They limited South Dakota to a 3-13 (23%) performance on third down. The Jayhawks will need to find ways to move the ball more consistently since quarterback Jason Bean only threw for 163 yards.
Bean provided balance in the rushing attack as he added 54 yards on 15 attempts. Moving the chains to keep the Jayhawk defense fresh and the Coastal Carolina offense on the bench is the way to go. If it gets into a shootout, the Jayhawks will be doomed.
Why Coastal Carolina Wins
The Chanticleers are an offensive juggernaut that brings back a ton of talent from a season ago. Grayson McCall at quarterback is capable of torching any opposing defense due to his legs. The ability to extend plays in football is challenging for defenders.
Tight end Isaiah Likely is a beast due to his yards after the catch. Whenever the team is in trouble, we will see Likely pluck a pigskin.
The passes that get thrown up for grabs more times than not, are brought in by Likely. Making those 50-50 jump balls turn into 90-10 type of plays is what makes this offense electric.
Look at what he did last year.
- 30 receptions
- 601 receiving yards
- 20 YPC
- 5 TDs
Wide receiver Jaivon Heiligh is a capable performer that has been able to get open in his sleep. The passing attack has plenty of favorable coverages due to most defenses loading the box up to pressure McCall.
This offense is impossible to limit due to their big-play ability, but this team has fed off the home crowd. CCU is one of the better offenses from a season ago, and it is unlikely the Jayhawks can keep up.
Kansas vs. Coastal Carolina Prediction
This is one of the bigger spreads of the week between the Top 25 FBS competition. For the others, feel free to peruse my week two college football betting lines breakdown.
Kansas has their wins set at 1.5 wins this season, and they are already 1-0. The bad news is that they are heavy underdogs in nearly every game.
Coastal Carolina would be at least a middle-of-the-pack Big 12 squad, if not better.
The discussion is if they are good enough to cover. Kansas has somehow covered in five of their past ten games in which they are road underdogs.
Lance Leipold is in his first season at the helm for the Jayhawks, but this is a mismatch in more ways than one. Coastal Carolina will dominate at the line of scrimmage and name the number they want on the scoreboard. Baylor and Duke are coming up for Kansas, so that might be their best bet to pull off an upset.
Kansas vs. Coastal Carolina Pick
The Jayhawks have been getting thumped for years in the Big 12. So, this is not the week to feel risky on the money line.
Coastal Carolina should win this one by halftime. The backups will keep piling it on, and this could be a beatdown to watch.
Coastal Carolina should win by 30-plus. I smell a 50-point burger on a Friday night in Conway. Lay the points and watch the Chanticleers continue their torrid offensive pace that began last season.
Coastal Carolina (-25)-105
