Ostapenko vs Kudermetova – 2022 WTA Dubai Final Preview & Prediction

| February 18, 2022 8:25 am PDT

Jelena Ostapenko or Veronika Kudermetova – who’s going to win in the 2022 WTA Dubai final? The winner will get ahold of the title, as well as 470 ranking points and $104,180 in cash. That seems like good enough of a motivation for each player to give their utmost.

Quality-wise, the two don’t differ much. Evidence is that Ostapenko is sitting in the #21 position in the WTA Rankings, while Kudermetova is ten spots below. Still, the winner of the tournament will be able to move a few positions above.

Speaking of WTA Rankings, this year’s tournament was supposed to see some of the biggest names of women’s tennis compete for the title. A lot of them did fly over to the United Arab Emirates – seven players from the WTA Top 15 entered the event.

However, all of them got knocked out of the competition early in the tournament. Many of those superstars got beaten by Ostapenko, which is why the 24-year-old Latvian is seen as the favorite by the bookmakers.

Ostapenko vs Kudermetova Odds

Jelena Ostapenko to Win -143
Veronika Kudermetova To Win -102
Over 21.5 Games -110
Under 21.5 Games -110
As you can see from the odds above, bookmakers see Jelena Ostapenko as the favorite. This is only the second time since the start of the tournament that she’s not the underdog in bookies’ eyes. The reason is that she’s already beaten much better players than her next opponent, Veronika Kudermetova.

Jelena Ostapenko the Giant Slayer

Excluding the Round 1 match with Sofia Kenin, Jelena Ostapenko was the underdog each time she went onto the court so far. She was a +200 underdog against Iga Swiatek in Round of 16, a +100 underdog against Petra Kvitova in the quarterfinal, and a +240 underdog against Simona Halep in the semifinal.

So, what’s her secret? Strong serve, fast legs, and incredible stamina. Ostapenko’s been able to drain her opponents of energy, often staying on the court for a long time.

Actually, two of her previous three matches lasted for over two and a half hours. Her most recent match lasted shorter, though. It’s because her opponent Simona Halep was completely knackered entering the final set. We saw her practically surrendering to Ostapenko, who won the final set 6-0.

Veronika Kudermetova Playing Her Second Final of the Year

The Russian player had to play only three WTA Dubai matches to get to the final. The reason? Her opponent in the semifinal – Marketa Vondrousova – surrendered the match even before it began.

Still, the matches she played in Dubai were all pretty challenging. In Round 1, she defeated Victoria Azarenka, who was the #1 favorite to win the 2022 WTA Dubai before the start of the tournament. From there, Kudermetova went on to beat Garbine Muguruza and J.N. Teichmann, both in three sets.

With some amazing performances and a little bit of luck, Kudermetova has made it to her second final of the year. Previously, she played in the final of the WTA Melbourne, where Simona Halep beat her in straight sets.

What’s interesting is that she got to that final too after her opponent withdrew in the semifinal. At Melbourne, it was Naomi Osaka who withdrew for an abdominal injury.

Ostapenko vs Kudermetova Prediction

  • Jelena Ostapenko

I think Jelena Ostapenko will win the 2022 WTA Dubai. Judging by what we’ve seen from her so far, she obviously has the skills to beat Kudermetova. On top of that, she also has the motivation to win in Dubai.

The thing is that by winning the 470 ranking points, she’d move up several positions. She could even land in the Top 10 for the first time in nearly four years.

If you agree with my betting pick for the Dubai final, why not head to a top-rated tennis sportsbook and put your money on Ostapenko?
